Careers360: Books play a very critical role in the preparation; kindly name some books which students should follow.

Partha Halder: For JEE Main preparation, NCERT books are the most important and relevant materials. In fact, JEE Main closely follows NCERT, especially for Chemistry (Organic & Inorganic) and Physics portion. It is a myth that if someone studies or refers to too many books it will help immensely in JEE Main. Over the years we have seen that the books available in the market does not follow JEE Main syllabus or difficulty in totality and hence it may be counterproductive. Apart from NCERT books, students must practice and/or solve NCERT exemplars, last 10 years JEE Main questions paper (or screening paper that were administered before JEE Main started).

Careers360: What is the best method to study according to you?

Partha Halder: Few best ways to prepare for JEE Main are :

  • Prepare a list of topics both for Class XI & XII.

  • Divide the available time to cover the topics.

  • Study topic wise and concept wise.

  • In Class XII, devote good time to cover Class XI syllabus as Class XII syllabus will be covered well in view of the pre-board exam in school.

  • Should target to complete the syllabus 2 months ahead of the exam. So, for JEE Main 2020 (January edition), syllabus should be completed by November 2019.

  • Practice/Solve sufficient number of questions for every topic/concept.

  • In the last 2 months, the focus should be on revision.

  • Solve question papers on CBT mode.

  • If possible, subscribe to a CBT based All India Test Series and solve mock test papers throughout the year.

  • Engage in self performance analysis after every test.

  • Students should join a professional coaching institute as it helps to set the right direction in which effort must be put in for the preparation.

Careers360: The school board exam and JEE Main are quite overlapping in terms of schedule. What could be an effective way to prepare and score well in such condition?

Partha Halder: The difference between JEE Main and board exam syllabus is that, in JEE Main questions are asked from class XI syllabus along with Class XII. A student preparing for board exam will do well in JEE Main in the Class XII portion. Additionally they will have to revise and practice Class XI portion also. So, a student must prepare a study plan by balancing both the syllabus.

Careers360: Which of the topics you will suggest as important? Please mention it for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics separately.

Partha Halder: In a competitive exam like JEE Main, every topic is important, we cannot make a differentiation here. Questions could be asked from any topic and hence requisite focus must be given to all topics. Just to understand the point better, in JEE Main, every correct answer fetches +4 marks and incorrect answer fetches -1 marks. If a student gets incorrect answer, total marks lost would be 5, and for every mark lost rank variation could be in the range of 500 to 1000. So, for 5 marks loss, the fall could be between 2000 to 4000 ranks.

There are certain topics which are sometimes neglected by students, reason being :

  • There are few topics in JEE Main which is not a part of JEE Advanced syllabus. If a student is targeting JEE Advanced, chances are high that they might leave those topics and thus their JEE Main performance could be affected for example : chemistry in everyday life; environmental chemistry etc.

  • Topics could be boring or too informative or less logical or one has to memorize’

In conclusion, a student cannot consider leaving any topic.

Careers360: Students rely hugely on coaching study material, where do you extract that from; which books are used for the purpose?

Partha Halder: Coaching institute like FIITJEE, does not rely on books available in the market. FIITJEE has its own internal team of subject matter experts who create fresh and original questions for the students.

Careers360: JEE Main is now conducted twice a year, how do you find it from the students perspective?

Partha Halder: Well, from students perspective, here are a few pointers :

  • The 1st JEE Main exam in January can be looked as a practice round before the April exam (final round). Key learning from the 1st exam can help to iron out the weaknesses and perform well in the 2nd exam. Moreover students will get an opportunity to gain familiarity with the question pattern and its difficulty level.

  • Best score out of the 2 attempts will be considered for the All India Ranking. So, one bad day will not have a bearing on the final result.

  • A good score in 1st JEE Main, will enable a student to focus entirely on board exam and JEE Advanced instead of another JEE Main attempt.

Careers360: What role do coaching institutes play in the preparation of JEE Main exam?

Partha Halder: The fundamental role of a coaching institute is to help a child to channelize their effort in the right direction for optimum output/result. Apart from this coaching institute help students in realizing their potential and help them perform. During this process, experts analyze a student’s performance, suggest ways to improve, mentor the students emotionally and instill confidence in them. The peer group in an institute helps to develop a competitive environment inside the classroom for bring out the best in every student.

Careers360: A lot of students find themselves nowhere citing the difficulty level of the exam, either in between of their preparation or at the beginning; what would you say to encourage them?

Partha Halder: JEE Main as an exam is not difficult, rather it is competitive. It requires a student to have a good speed, accuracy and lots of exposure on solving test papers in computer based mode. So students must engage themselves in all of these for a holistic preparation.

Careers360: As an expert, what would you suggest as a thumb rule to follow for JEE Main preparation?

Partha Halder: There is no shortcut to success. Hence, students must focus on developing their fundamental concepts.

in jee main class 12 Marks details I have given chemistry Marks instead of computer science Marks though I got higher Marks in computer science .will it create any problem?

Aditya kumar Student Expert 22nd Oct, 2019
Hello there!

Greetings !

To calculate percentage in 12th board for filling jee mains application form you need to consider the marks scored in five subjects - (1) Physics, (2) Chemistry, (3) Mathematics, (4) A language and (5) Any subject other than the above four, is taken into account. So, it's good that you don't replaced chemistry marks by cs marks. Also, you don't need to worry at all, you will not face any problem as there's no percentage barrier to be eligible for jee mains. The criteria to be eligible for jee mains is that candidate should have passed class 12 or qualifying the exam in 2018 or 2019 or should be appearing in 2020 for it with Physics,Mathematics, and any one of (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject).

The percentage barrier comes while taking admission in NIT,IIT and GFTI for which candidates should have obtained a minimum of 75% marks in class 12 or equivalent exam or they must be in the top 20 percentile in their class 12 examination. For SC/ ST, the eligibility is to obtain a minimum of 65% marks in class 12 or equivalent.

hi, will it be asked during placement if I am dropping two years for jee mains? i passed in 2018 12th, i am studying in a college 1st year in 2019, and if i give jee mains 2020, will it be considered two years drop? or one year drop? since im doing college as well as preparing.

Shudhanshu Gupta Student Expert 21st Oct, 2019
as you said that you did a partial drop and you had completed your class 12th in 2018 so if you will give JEE mains in 2020 then definitely there will be your two year drop considered, for that you will have to submit the reason for this drop when you will take admission in any college after selection, and if you give JEE mains in 2019 then your one year drop will be considered.
Best of luck.

How to score 90 percentilein JEE mains

Ashish pal Student Expert 21st Oct, 2019

Hello dear aspirant.

I think you will be well aware of the fact that from this year onwards there is slight change in JEE mains examination pattern. Scoring 90 percentile is not very tough still . You have to study regular and solve at least one practice paper daily and join test serieses to evaluate yourself.

It will surely help you.

Good luck
