Depending on the exam difficulty level and number of exam takers, the cutoff for GATE 2026 will vary. For papers that are usually high in demand, the cutoff will be higher, whereas for the lower demand papers, the cutoff will be lower. The GATE 2026 cutoffs will also depend on the reservation category of the candidate. All qualified candidates will have to participate in the counselling process for admission to IITs, NITS, IIITs, and GFTIs. The GATE cutoff for admission will be released after each round of the COAP counselling and CCMT counselling.

    GATE Cutoff 2026

How to Calculate GATE 2026 Qualifying Marks?

The authority calculates GATE qualifying marks by using a normalisation formulae. That normalisation formula includes, GATE marks secured by the candidates, mean marks of the top students appeared for the exam, standard deviation and category wise reservation.

Difference Between GATE Qualifying Cutoff and GATE Admission Cutoff?

GATE aspirants need to know the difference between GATE qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff. GATE qualifying cutoff means the minimum marks that are required to qualify for the GATE exam. GATE admission cutoff means the marks required for admission into IITs, NITs, or PSUs.

Formula to Calculate GATE 2026 Cutoff

As per the information released in the GATE information brochure, the GATE 2026 cutoff for OBC, SC and ST will be calculated using the formula given below. It depends on the GATE cutoff for general.

    GATE cutoff for GENERAL category = max(25, min(40, x+ y))

Here the x is the mean and y is the standard deviation of marks of all the candidates who appeared for the test paper

    • GATE Cutoff for OBC-NCL/EWS categories = (9/10) × Qualifying marks for GENERAL category
    • GATE Cutoff for SC/ST/PwD categories = (2/3) × Qualifying marks for GENERAL category

    GATE 2026 Cutoff Importance

Candidates can check the cutoff for GATE 2026 on this page. GATE cutoff 2026 will be available for EC, CS, MA, DA, PH, CH, MN and all other papers. It is important to note that two types of cutoffs will be released for the GATE exam: the qualifying GATE 2026 cutoff and the admission cutoff for GATE 2026. The differences between the qualifying and admission cutoff marks of GATE 2026 are specified below.

Difference Between GATE Qualifying and Admission Cutoff

Students appearing in GATE must know the difference between the GATE qualifying cutoff 2026 and the GATE 2026 admission cutoff. GATE qualifying marks are the minimum cutoff to qualify for the entrance test to be eligible for the admission process. The qualifying marks of GATE 2026 will vary for each category. On the other hand, the GATE admission cutoff will be released by COAP and CCMT. Candidates who rank in GATE more than the admission cutoff will be offered admission.

    • GATE Qualifying Cutoff 2026: The GATE 2026 qualifying cutoff is the minimum mark required by the candidates to qualify for the GATE exam. Hence, candidates who clear the GATE 2026 qualifying cutoff will be eligible to participate in the GATE COAP 2026 counselling. GATE qualifying cutoff marks 2026 will be different for all 30 subjects. Qualifying GATE cut-off for IIT and NIT will also vary as per the different categories of candidates. The GATE qualifying cutoff is released by the conducting institute along with the declaration of the result.
    • GATE 2026 Admission Cutoff: GATE cutoff 2026 is the minimum qualifying score that candidates require to gain admission to the participating institutes. The cutoff score of GATE enables candidates to gain a seat in the desired institute. The admission cutoff of GATE 2026 will be released by the institute at the time of admission, for which admission is desired.

GATE 2026 Opening & Closing Ranks

GATE cutoff marks for IIT and NIT will be released in the form of opening and closing ranks. After the declaration of GATE results, IITs and NITs will start the MTech admission process separately. After the application and interview, the institutes will release the GATE opening and closing ranks.
