GATE Exam Pattern 2019 – IIT Madras has successfully conducted the GATE 2019 exam for all the 24 papers on February 2, 3, 9 and 10 in morning and afternoon shift each day. The GATE 2019 exam pattern has been announced by IIT Madras through an official notification on July 6, 2018. GATE exam pattern 2019 consist of detailed information related to the online examination. The subject-wise schedule of GATE 2019 exam has been released by IIT Madras and is available below on this page. GATE 2019 has been conducted for a total of 24 papers. The examination of GATE was 3 hours long in duration and consist of both multiple choice and numerical answer type questions. Each paper consist of General Aptitude questions which have to be attempted. The subject-specific questions is given according to the subject selected by the candidates. The total marks of the examination is 100. GATE 2019 exam pattern allows the candidates to know how the examination will be conducted so that they are able to prepare accordingly. GATE 2019 question paper will consist of three sections except for AR, CY, GG, EY, XL, PH and MA :

  • General Aptitude

  • Engineering Mathematics (for XL papers it is Chemistry)

  • Subject – Specific section

General Aptitude Section

The paper will consist of a mandatory General Aptitude (GA) section which will have 10 questions. 5 of the questions will be of 1 mark and the remaining 5 will be of 2 marks. Therefore, the total marks for this section will be 15 marks.

Marking Scheme

  • 1 mark MCQs – 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.

  • 2 mark MCQs – 2/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong response.

  • Zero marks will be awarded for unattempted questions

  • No negative marking will be done for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions

GATE Exam Pattern 2019 - Nature of Questions asked

There are two types of questions that can be expected by the candidates for GATE 2019. The different categories of questions are:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) – The questions are objective in nature and have a set of four options out of which one will be the correct answer.

  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) – The answer to the questions will be a real number which the candidates will have to use to enter a mouse and virtual keyboard. The answers can either be an integer (3, 7, 21 and more) or a number with decimals (for example 10.1) or even a decimal number. No choices will be provided for these type of questions.

Additional Information on GATE 2019 Marking Scheme

  • GATE papers with the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE will include a compulsory sections of Engineering mathematics (15% of total marks) and General Aptitude (15% of total marks). The rest of the paper (70%) will be based on the subject selected by the candidate.

  • However, GATE papers with the codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, ST and XL will consist of the compulsory section of General Aptitude (15% of the total marks) and the remaining 85% will be for the selected subject.

GATE Exam Pattern 2019 - Information about GATE Papers

GATE 2019 Papers (Except GG, XE, XL)

  • The questions asked will be multiple choice questions and numerical answer type in nature.

  • The question paper will consist of 25 questions of 1 mark each and 30 questions which will be of 2 marks each.

Geology and Geophysics Paper (GG)

In Geology and Geophysics Paper, one section consists of General Aptitude questions. The other section is divided into two parts – Part A and Part B.

  • Part A has to be attempted by all the candidates

  • Part B consists of two sections – Geology (Section I) and Geophysics (Section II)

  • The candidates will be able to select which section they want to attempt.

  • Part A will consist of 25 questions of 1 mark each. Numerical answer type questions will also be asked in this part.

  • Part B (Section I and II) will have 30 questions of 2 marks each. Numerical answer type questions may be included in both the sections.

Engineering Sciences (XE)

  • The paper will consist of one compulsory section i.e., Engineering Mathematics

  • General aptitude consisting of 15 marks also has to be attempted.

  • Section A will have 11 questions of 15 marks in total. Some numerical answer type questions will be present in this section.

  • Candidates will be able to select any other section from Section B to H.

  • The sections (B to H) will consist of 22 questions each with total marks of 35 marks.

Life Sciences (XL)

  • The compulsory section for this paper is Chemistry (Section P) which consists of 15 questions of total 25 marks. Numerical answer type questions are also asked in this section.

  • General Aptitude section of total 15 marks also has to be solved.

  • Apart from Chemistry, the candidates will have to select one section from Q to U. Each section will consist of 20 questions of a total of 30 marks

GATE 2019 Exam Pattern – Design of Questions

GATE 2019 examination questions will be created as such so that the following abilities of the candidates will be tested:

  • Recall – The questions will be related to principles, facts, formula or laws of the selected paper. The memory and computation skills of the candidate will also be tested out in the examination.

  • Comprehension – The basic understanding of the candidates in his/her field of study is checked in the exam. Simple conclusions have to be drawn out from fundamental ideas.

  • Application – For this category, the candidates will be required to rely on his/her computational and logical reasoning skills.

  • Analysis and Synthesis – The questions in this category are accompanied by data, diagrams and images. The answers can be found by analyzing the information contained in them.

Important Instructions for GATE 2019

The candidates will have to follow the given instructions for GATE 2019 after he/she enters the examination centre:

  • Physical calculators, wristwatches and mobile phones will not be allowed inside the examination centre.

  • A virtual calculator will be provided to the candidates on the screen.

Steps to Answer GATE 2019 Questions

GATE 2019 will be conducted in online mode. The candidates will have to answer the questions asked in the examination online. For the purpose of answering the questions, a question palette will be displayed showing the status of each question. The palette is given below:


 A clock will also be present in the computer screen and will be located at the top right corner of the screen. This will inform the candidates about the time left to complete the examination. As soon as the timer shows zero, the computer will close down automatically and the examination will end.

Navigating to a Question

  • The candidates will have to directly click on the question paper given on the palette to jump to a particular question.

  • The candidates will be able to view all questions simultaneously if the question paper button is pressed. However, options for multiple choice questions will not be displayed.

Answering a Question 

  • To answer multiple choice questions, the candidates will have to click on the button of the selected option. To de-select the option, the candidates will have to re-click on the button or select Clear Response button. For a change of option, the candidates will have to reselect another option.

  • For numerical answer type questions, the candidates will have to enter their answer using the virtual keyboard. If the answer is in decimal, then it can be entered with or without the “0” before the decimal part.

Saving Answers

  • Candidates will have to click on the “Save and Next” button, to save an answer. To mark a question for review, the candidates will have to select “Mark for Review & Next” button.

  • After the time limit is over, the attempted answers will be automatically submitted.

Important Points of GATE Exam Pattern 2019

  • GATE 2019 will be conducted in online mode i.e., it will be a computer-based test (CBT)

  • The total duration of the examination will be 3 hours.

  • GATE 2019 exam paper will consist mainly of two types of questions – Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

  • For MCQs, the candidates will have to select the correct option whereas, for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions, the candidates will have to enter the correct answer using the virtual keyboard.

  • A section related to General Aptitude (GA) will be present in the examination paper in addition to subject-specific questions.

  • A scribble pad will be provided to the candidates for rough work.
