GATE Exam Pattern 2021 - IIT Bombay has released the exam pattern of GATE 2021 on the official website- gate.iitb.ac.in. GATE 2021 exam pattern consists of mode of GATE 2021 exam, number of questions asked, section in paper, marking scheme, and more. There are a few changes in the GATE paper pattern 2021 such as including Multiple Select Question (MSQs) and/or Numerical Answer Type Questions. Also, the number of questions in the Engineering Mathematics section has been increased by 3 and Subject questions reduced by 3. GATE exam pattern 2021 will help candidates to know all important details about the GATE question paper which will help them to prepare in a better way.

As per the GATE exam pattern, there will be MCQs, MSQs and/or NAT in GATE exam. Also, the marking schemes for different question papers will differ from each other. According to the exam pattern of GATE 2021, General Aptitude Subject will be common in all the questions papers. GATE question paper will be created based on the latest GATE examination pattern. GATE Exam Pattern 2021- What's New?
A few new additions are done in GATE 2021 exam pattern. Candidates have to consider the below changes in the GATE paper pattern to prepare well for the exam.
- IIT Bombay has released an official notice stating that two new subject-papers have been added for the GATE 2021 examination. This has made the total of GATE subject papers to 27. GATE 2021 new subjects are - ES (Environmental Science and Engineering) and XH (Humanities and Social Sciences).
- Syllabus revised for all papers
- New type of question- (MSQs) added
- Engineering Mathematics questions has been increased by 3 and Subject questions reduced by 3
GATE Exam Pattern 2021 Highlights

There will be two question types:

Will comprise of total 3 sections except for AR, CY, GG, EY, XL, PH and MA papers :
General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics (for XL papers it is Chemistry) and Subject – Specific section

Will consist of a compulsory General Aptitude (GA) section constituting of 10 questions. 5 of the questions among 10 will carry 1 mark and the rest 5 will carry 2 marks each. Total marks - 15.

GATE 2021 Marking Scheme
In GATE 2021, General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics will be compulsory sections which will include 15% weightage each in total marks in GATE papers with codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE. The remaining 70% weightage will be given to the subject selected by the student.
In case of GATE 2021 question papers AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, ST and XL there will be a compulsory section of General Aptitude (15% of the total marks). The remaining 85% weightage will be given to the selected subject.
GATE 2021 Question Paper Patterns
Below are the few important points that candidates need to know about GATE papers 2021:
GATE 2021 Papers (Except GG, XE, XL)
GATE 2021 papers will have 45 questions, out of which 15 questions will carry 1 mark each and 30 will carry 2 marks each.
There will be multiple choice questions and numerical answer type questions present in GATE paper.
GATE 2021 Geology and Geophysics Paper (GG)
The Geology and Geophysics Paper of GATE will be divided in two parts - A and B.
Part A is mandatory, while Part B will comprise two sections – Geology (Section I) and Geophysics (Section II). It is upto the candidates which section they want to opt.
Part A will contain 25 questions carrying 1 mark each. Numerical answer type questions will also be present in this section.
Part B (Section I and II) will contain 30 questions carrying 2 marks each.
GATE 2021 Engineering Sciences (XE)
This paper will have one mandatory section which all candidates have to attempt i.e., Engineering Mathematics
Another compulsory section will be General aptitude consists of 15 marks.
Section A will consist of 11 questions of total 15 marks. The paper may also contain Some numerical answer type questions..
Candidates will have the option to choose any of the sections from Section B to H.
The sections (B to H) will comprise of 22 questions each carrying 35 marks in total.

GATE Life Sciences (XL)
Chemistry (Section P) will be a mandatory section, consisting of 15 questions of total 25 marks. This section will also have a few numerical answer type questions.
The paper will also have a General Aptitude section of total 15 marks.
Apart from Chemistry, the candidates will also have to choose one more section from Q to U. Each of the sections from Q to U will consist of 20 questions carrying total 30 marks

How will GATE 2021 Question Paper Design?
GATE exam will test the abilities of candidates registered for the examination on various grounds. The question papers are designed as per the GATE 2021 exam pattern
Recall – The questions asked in the GATE question paper will be directly linked to the principles, facts, formula or laws of the paper selected by candidate. Therefore, memory and computation skills of the candidates will be put to tests through this.
Comprehension – There will be questions that will test the basic understanding of the candidates in respective fields of study. Therefore, candidates will have to stress on fundamental ideas to draw out simple conclusions.
Application – Candidates will be required to apply their computational and logical reasoning skills.
Analysis and Synthesis – The questions will comprise a mix of data, diagrams and images. Candidates will be able to solve the questions by analyzing the information contained in them.
GATE 2021 Exam- Key Guideline
Keep the following instruction in mind while appearing for GATE 2021:
Physical calculators, wristwatches, and mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the examination centres.
For the ease and convenience of candidates, a virtual calculator will be provided on the screen of the candidates.

How to navigate to a question?
On the right side of the screen candidates will find a serial-wise list of questions.
Candidates can directly navigate to a question by clicking on the question number.
The question will be displayed on the screen when the question button is pressed.
Procedure to answer a question?
In case of MCQs, candidates will have to click on the particular option to select it.
To de-select the option, click on the option again. Candidates can also select the clear response option to de-select any option.
In case of numerical type questions, enter the answer through the virtual keyboard present on the screen.
Steps to save answers?
Candidates will have to click on the “Save and Next” option given on the screen.
If candidates are unsure of their answer they can mark the question for review by selecting the “Mark for Review and Next” option.
Once the time limit all the answers will be automatically submitted.
GATE Exam Pattern 2021 - Points to Remember
GATE 2021 will be conducted only in online mode (Computer Based Test mode).
The exam will be held for 3 hours.
All of the questions that will be asked in GATE will be related to the of GATE syllabus 2021.
According to the GATE 2021 exam pattern, there will be two types of questions- Multiple Choice Questions and Numerical Answer Type Questions.
