IIT Guwahati has released the GATE 2026 passing marks online. According to the standards set by the authorised bodies, only those students will be allowed to pass the GATE 2026 exam. The passing mark of GATE 2026 will depend on the difficulty level of the exam, the total number of candidates who appeared, the category of the candidates who appeared for the test and passing marks tendencies that were set by the GATE in the previous years.
GATE aspirants must be aware that the GATE qualifying cutoff and GATE admission cutoff are both completely different. GATE qualifying cutoffs are the minimum marks needed to qualify for GATE. While the admission qualifying cutoffs are the marks required for admission into prestigious IITs, NITs, etc.
The authority calculates GATE qualifying scores by using a specific normalisation formula for all categories. This formula contains details of marks secured by the candidates, mean marks of the top scorers, standard deviation and category-based reservation.
The GATE 2026 cutoff for OBC, SC and ST will be calculated using the formula given below. It depends on the GATE cutoff for general.
GATE cutoff for GENERAL category = max(25, min(40, x+ y))
Here the x is the mean and y is the standard deviation of marks of all the candidates who appeared for the test paper
Below are the main factors that influence the GATE qualifying marks. The GATE qualifying marks changes every year.
