Careers360: When did you start your JEE Advanced preparation? Tell us something about your preparation strategy and daily routine for JEE Advanced?
Ramya Narayanasamy:I started my preparation for JEE Main and JEE Advanced from first year of my Intermediate. I focussed completely on clearing the basic concepts during the initial stage of preparation. I use to put 8 to 10 hours of preparation daily.
Careers360: How was the preparation for JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?
Ramya Narayanasamy: JEE Advanced requires more in-depth study of the topics as compared to JEE Main. The approach also needs to differ. So I started preparing for the extra topics and then shifted my focus on thought provoking problems. I solved the question papers of previous years, learnt to manage my time and prepared myself for any kind of question paper.
Careers360: Since there was just a month after the JEE Main, elaborate on your preparation strategy?
Ramya Narayanasamy: I focussed on thought provoking problems. I dedicated 8 to 10 hours in a day to my studies. While studying, I also practiced the technique of relaxation. This is actually very important as one cannot be successful under stress or pressure.
Careers360: Did you take coaching for JEE and if yes from where? What are the benefits of coaching according to you?
Ramya Narayanasamy: Yes, I studied in the college which also prepares the students for the JEE Advanced. It was very beneficial. They not only focussed on our weak areas but scientifically prepared the schedules so as to get the best out of us. They also worked towards making us mentally strong for the examination.
Careers360: Mock tests and sample papers – how extensively did you practise with the help of these? Do you think practising from the previous year papers help and how?
Ramya Narayanasamy: I practised a few sample papers but our college conducted examinations every alternate days. The difficulty level of the questions varied every time. These mock exams helped us to manage the time. Different pattern of questions in terms of marks that were asked in these exams helped me to perform well in the JEE Advanced exam.
Careers360: Are there any special books that you feel have helped with your JEE Advanced preparation?
Ramya Narayanasamy: There were no specific books that I studied from. I basically studied from the CBSE, State board books and those which were recommended by the college.
Careers360: Did you face any problem during the JEE Advanced examination? Which subject was the easiest and which was the toughest in JEE Advanced? What do you think is a tough thing to manage during the JEE Advanced exam? What is the difference between Paper 1and Paper 2 of JEE Advanced 2017?
Ramya Narayanasamy: I did not face any problem because this year the number of questions were limited (less), so time was not a factor. I always did my paper II better than then Paper I in my college examination and I did the same during the JEE Advanced exam.
Careers360: The answer keys revealed bonus marks for 5 questions. Dis you answer those questions? What was your reaction while answering them and after the answer key announced the bonus marks?
Ramya Narayanasamy: Yes, I answered all the questions. It is just that it was slightly time consuming, but as I have already said, time was not factor this time so this did not affect me at all. As in cricket / sports we say that the decision of the umpire is final, in this case I totally agree that the decision of IIT Madras is final.
