With an unsuccessful attempt (for ONGC) in the previous year, the bright mind made it to the top notch this year with all the hard work, coaching and various books put together for a few months. He believes that the same preparation strategy can not fit for all, that’s why he suggests that one may take a few days, but should have a self-made strategy and be followed religiously. In this GATE 2020 topper interview with Careers360, Gaurav Kumar (AIR 1 in Petroleum Engineering) shares his success mantra for the future aspirants.

Careers360 - Tell us something about yourself; Where have you done your engineering from and in which branch?
Gaurav - I’m Gaurav Kumar from Begusarai, Bihar. I have done my class 10 education from Vikas Vidyalaya, Begusarai and class 12 from B.S.S. Collegiate, Begusarai. I completed my B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering from IIT(ISM), Dhanbad in 2019.

Careers360 - Which GATE Paper did you appear for and what rank did you secure? What is your GATE score and how many marks did you obtain out of 100 in GATE paper?
Gaurav - I appeared in Petroleum Engineering paper in GATE 2020 from. I secured AIR 1, obtaining the highest GATE score of 1000, with my marks being 76.67 out of 100.
Careers360 - Is this your first attempt or did you attempt GATE earlier?
Gaurav - This is not my first attempt. I had qualified GATE 2019 also, but my score was not adequate enough that could have enabled me to land up in a post of my choice in ONGC.
Careers360 - What was the reason that you appeared for GATE 2020?
Gaurav - Primary reason behind me taking GATE is to go for PSU recruitment through GATE.
Careers360 - Have you applied to any PSUs recruiting through GATE, if yes, which ones?
Gaurav - If the trend of previous years recruitment is anything to go by, then again ONGC will be the only PSU to recruit Petroleum engineers through GATE 2020. I am absolutely going to go for it as soon as the application channel through ONGC notification opens.
Careers360 - When did you start your preparation? How did you prepare for the GATE exam? How many hours did you put in per day as per the stage of preparation?
Gaurav - I started my preparation in July 2019 after passing out of the college. I gave around 5-6 hours daily initially which I increased to 8-9 hours per day in the last two months. I usually gave one week of time to each subject but for subjects like reservoir in which I had to read more than 2 books, I gave two weeks. This way I completed my GATE 2020 syllabus by mid of October. After that, I started revision taking one by one and giving test series of those subjects.
Careers360 - Have you taken any coaching? If yes, from where and how did it help?
Gaurav - I took coaching from Petrogate Academy, Dehradun. It helped me a lot in making my concepts clear, solving my doubts and preparing in an effective manner. The study material and notes from coaching institutes provided a concrete and concise understanding of every topic asked in GATE exam.
Careers360 - Can you share any preparation strategies with our readers? When should one start their preparation for GATE? How to schedule study time and make timetables?
Gaurav - About the preparation strategy, I would say that take a few days and decide how you will proceed. Strategy varies from person to person. I can only advise aspirants that don’t give too much time to one subject and don’t leave any topic unprepared but stick only to the portion that’s given in the syllabus.
Careers360 - How important do you feel mock tests are and why? Is it true that if one solves the previous year GATE question papers, there is a good chance of cracking the exam successfully?
Gaurav - GATE Mock tests are very important in any exam including GATE. I gave mock tests before the exam and also throughout the preparation. It helps in evaluating the preparation level, mistakes we are making and time we take for solving the questions.
Careers360 - Which books did you follow for GATE preparation? Please name some very important and must read books for GATE.
Gaurav - Here are the books that I referred to for GATE preparation:

Careers360 - What are the topics one should focus more on? Kindly give us some details.
Gaurav - First focus should be on most basic and conceptual areas like Reservoir, Drilling and Production. Then go for subjects like Offshore, Formation Evaluation, Well testing. After completing and revising all this, one should go for Geology, HSE and Latest trends.
Careers360 - What was the toughest aspect in your GATE preparation?
Gaurav - Preparing topics which are mostly memory based topics proved to be the toughest.
Careers360 - Name some important topics that you feel are a must read for any student attempting the GATE exam?
Gaurav - Reservoir, Drilling, Production and Mathematics are such topics as per my understanding.
Careers360 - What did you do for leisure? Any specific activities that helped you unwind?
Gaurav - Youtube videos, Twitter were my leisure partners during preparation.
Careers360 - How should you schedule answering the GATE exam – which section to attempt first and which next? Did you have any strategy? Kindly share your exam experience with us.
Gaurav - I attempt the questions in the same order as they appear on screen. So can not say much about strategizing as I believe in dealing with questions as they come up.
Careers360 - What did you feel was a tough thing for you in the GATE exam?
Gaurav - GATE 2020 PE paper was tough and lengthy. So, to have a proper time management so that I could attempt maximum number of questions, was a tough thing.
Careers360 - Any advice for the future aspirants?
Gaurav - My advice to students preparing for the GATE exam is that they must not pressurize themselves to study. Study in a planned manner, stay focussed and take mock tests, and most importantly, have fun.

Following points will help you to qualify GATE :-
1.You are advised to refer the GATE previous year question papers to have an idea about the difficulty level of exam, pattern of exam and questions, topics which are covered frequently or which topic has more weightage over the others.
2. You should have a clear understanding of the GATE syllabus and exam pattern.GATE syllabus comprises the subjects and topics which are taught at graduate level programs in engineering.
3. You must select the best study material for GATE 2021 preparation to come up with the best result. You should refer to the books which are easy to understand.

5. What you have studied during the whole day you must revise that before going to sleep.
