According to the students, the Civil Engineering paper was of moderate difficulty. For this paper, there were more Numerical Type questions. General aptitude and Engineering Mathematics section was easy. The highest weightage was from Geotech Engineering, Environment Engineering and Transportation Engineering. Civil Engineering

Paper was moderate in difficulty level. As per the reviews from the students, the paper was easy than the previous year paper. There were more than 25 NAT questions. Major questions were from Geotech and Environment. If we see previous year CE papers, we can see an increase in the number of questions from Environment over the years. Others topics that were asked are-

Mathematics and Aptitude was easy in difficulty level.

February 8, 2020 - (Afternoon Session)

Computer Science Engineering

As per the students who appeared for the Computer Science (CS) exam of GATE 2020, the paper was relatively easier this year. The question paper was not lengthy and most of the students finished the paper in time. Some students felt that CBT is helpful to students. The paper was easy but questions were a bit tricky. Compared to last year the difficulty level of this year's exam was not high. Algorithm, complexity, data structure and computer organizations had some really tricky questions. There were very few numerical questions and focus was more on theoretical questions.

  • Probability, Matrix, Calculus, Increasing function
  • Min-heap, Binary tree, Linked lists
  • Double Hashing, Recurrence, Relation, Worst case, Time complexity, Post-ordertraversal
  • Predicate Logic, Groups, Graph coloring, Minimum spanning tree
  • Regular expression, minimal finite automata, decidability, context free language , regular language, deterministic push down automata
  • Memory, Decoder, Multiplexer
  • ER diagram , Functional dependency(Normal form), SQL, B+ tree,Conflict equivalent
  • Introduction, L-attribute bottom-up design
  • Geometry, English- Grammar, Permutationand Combination, Profit and Loss, Graph, Coding and decoding

February 8, 2020 - (Forenoon Session)

Electrical Engineering

According to the students who attempted the Electrical Engineering paper of GATE 2020, the paper was moderate to tough in difficulty level. Most of the questions were from Electrical Machines, followed by Signals and Systems and Power Electronics. Around 14 questions were difficult in nature while the others were mostly of average difficulty. The most difficult questions were from Analog Electronics. Questions were not directly but candidates had to think creatively. Expected cutoff is around 25.

The overall difficulty level of the paper was moderate to difficult. The easy questions could be easily attempted. There were more numerical and geometrical questions. As compared to last year, the paper was difficult. However, the distribution of questions in GATE 2020 CSE paper was equal.

Electronics and Communication Engineering (Afternoon Session)

As per the students who appeared for the entrance exam, the paper was of moderate difficulty level. Control Systems and Networks had very easy questions. Mostly the question paper comprised of formula based questions. Reasoning was also very basic. The questions were of very easy difficulty level. There were 4-5 questions from Analog. EMFT had 4 questions which were very easy. There were 2-3 questions were from Signal Systems which were of high difficulty level. Reasoning had 10 questions. Mathematics section of this year was very easy compared to last year. Aptitude section had more questions from English and less from Aptitude section. Some of the topics asked in the exam were:

February 1, 2020 (Afternoon Session)

Production and Industrial Engineering (PI) - GATE Paper for Production and Industrial Engineering (PI) was moderate in difficulty level. Some of the topics asked were -

  • Miller Cutter
  • Welding
  • Beam
  • Tension of Shaft
  • Micrometer
  • Boring operation
  • Taylor's tool life
  • LPP equation two variable
  • Carnoy Engine
  • CNC Coding
  • Casting Techniques
  • Tolerance and Limits
  • IC engine-Flywheel

The Aptitude section was also easy in difficulty level.

Mechanical Engineering (ME2) - The difficulty level of the question paper was moderate to difficult. As per the students reaction, Mathematics and General Aptitude sections were easy as compared to other sections. Most of the questions asked were from production, Thermodynamics, and strength of material (SOM). On the other hand, questions from Theory of Machines and vibration were few. Also, more than 30 questions in the paper were NAT type.

February 1, 2020 (Forenoon Session)

Mechanical Engineering (ME 1) - As per the students who appeared for the GATE 2020 session 1, the examination was of moderate to difficult level. Many students found the question paper to be lengthy. The questions from Mathematics and GA section were easy. There were more than 30 Numerical Ability Type questions. The majority of questions were from manufacturing, thermodynamics, and SOM, whereas the questions from heat transfer were very few. Many questions in Mathematic section were covered from Matrices and Laplace. Also, the questions were application based.

GATE 2020 Analysis for Instrumentation Engineering -

GATE 2020 paper for Instrumentation was conducted in the forenoon session of February 1. According to the reviews provided by students, the paper was moderate in difficulty level. If we talk about the difficulty level of core subject, the questions asked were tough in nature. The core subject included questions From tolerance, Q-meter, sensor and transducer, optical, etc. The topic and subject-wise analysis of the paper is given below-

Network Theory - The topic had easy questions from Mesh Analysis, Resonance, etc. However, it has three questions from 3 phase which were tough.

Analog Electronics - Questions asked from the topic weremoderate in nature. Topics asked included Diode, OP-AMP.

Signal System - Moderate questions from topics like DTFT, Convulsion, Sampling, etc.

Control System - Medium level questions from topics like Nyquist Plots, polar plots, etc.

Engineering Mathematics - The subject had moderate to tough questions. Topics asked included probability, Linear Algebra, Vector, etc.

Aptitude - The subject has easy to moderate level questions.

GATE 2020 Cutoff

The qualifying scores/marks that the candidates have to secure to have a higher chance of admissions into the participating institutes will be the cutoff of GATE 2020. Question: What does it mean by a good attempt in GATE?

Answer:

A valid score in necessary in GATE for M.E./M.Tech admissions or PSU recruitment. If such a score is secured by the candidates, which meets the criteria for admissions and recruitment, then it can be considered a good attempt. The cutoff list varies every year and those candidates who meet the cutoff are considered to have had a good attempt in the exam.

Question: Are the questions repeated in GATE?

Answer:

GATE exam does not have the same questions every year. The concept and pattern of the questions will remain the same but there will be a change in date and difficulty level. 

Question: Are numerical type questions present in the exam of GATE?

Answer:

Yes. There will be some numerical type questions. Virtual on-screen calculator can be used by the candidates to answer such questions.

Question: Is the CSE paper of GATE really difficult?

Answer:

This will depend on the preparation level of the candidates. Since CSE is a popular subject, the competition for admission in this course is naturally high. To ensure that this paper is not difficult, the candidates are advised to commence their preparation beforehand and plan a good strategy.

Without the official cut off list declared, it is quite difficult to say anything. According to expected cut off list and previous years data, the cut off for CSE GATE 2020 for SC category will be around 16-20 marks.

For your marks your possible gate score will be in range 600-620. For this grade you have low chances for getting any of IITs. Some possible options are-

IIIT Jabalpur, NIT bhopal, NIT jamshedpur, NIT calicut, DTU Delhi and NIT silchar and may some other in average NITs.
