Mistakes to avoid:

  • Ignore Aptitude: General aptitude and Engineering Mathematics are approximately 30% of the total marks. So, only focusing on core subjects and ignoring the aptitude section is not a good strategy.

  • Passive learning: Some aspirants only focus on watching lectures and revising notes instead of actively solving problems. This will give them false confidence that they know a lot, but that’s just an illusion because GATE also tests applications of their knowledge. So, practice along with reading theory is also important.

  • Multiple Resources: Using multiple resources for the same topic might create confusion. Instead, stick to one source and revise it repeatedly; it will give you more clarity.

  • Don’t skip revision: Revising regularly can help you to remember the concepts for a longer period of time. If you delay it until the end of your exam, it will create panic, and there are chances that you might forget the basic detail if you feel pressured. So, keep in touch with the concepts, so they remain fresh in your mind.

  • Understand the guessing trap: MCQs carry ⅓ of negative marking, so guessing might be risky. As you might lose marks instead of gaining, if you are not sure about the answer. But NAT and MSQs have no negative marking; if you have some time left in the exam, then you can take a shot at these.

  • Protect your time: Question papers are designed in such a way that you will find some questions that you think you know, but they are just there to waste your time. And eventually, you will find a shortage of time for the rest of the questions. So, make a strategy before blindly starting to attempt the exam. Solve easy questions first, then in the second round, attempt the moderate questions. If you have time left than approach the tough and calculative questions.
