The GATE test is marked in a certain scheme. Exam questions are either 1 marked or 2 marked. In Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) the incorrect answers are marked negatively. In a 1-mark MCQ, one-third of the mark is deducted in case of a wrong answer and in 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark is deducted in case of a wrong answer. There is however no negative mark on wrong answers in MSQ (Multiple Select Questions) or NAT(Numerical Answer Type) questions. Also, there is no partial marking of the MSQ questions.
The GATE rank is based on your raw mark and indicates your position among all the candidates who appeared for that paper. A lower rank indicates high performance.
Rank 1=Topper
Higher Rank = Lower Chance at top IIT or PSUs

Based on these considerations, the following formula is used for calculating the normalized marks for the multi-session papers. The normalized marks of the jth candidate in the ith session, denoted by ??ij, are computed as

Where
?ij is the actual marks obtained by the jth candidate in the i th session;
?gt is the average marks of the top 0.1% of the candidates considering all sessions;
?gq is the sum of the mean and standard deviation marks of the candidates in the paper considering all sessions;
?ti is the average marks of the top 0.1% of the candidates in the ith session;
?iq is the sum of the mean marks and standard deviation marks of the ith session.
Calculation of GATE Score for All Papers
The GATE 2026 score will be computed using the formula given below.
GATE Score = ??q + (St-Sq) M-Mt/Mt-Mq
where,
M is the marks obtained by the candidate (actual marks for single session papers and normalized marks for multi-session papers);
?q is the qualifying marks for the General Category candidate in the paper;
?t is the mean of marks of top 0.1% or top 10 (whichever is larger) of the candidates who appeared in the paper (in case of multi-session papers including all sessions);
?q = 350 is the score assigned to ?q ; and
?t = 900 is the score assigned to ?t .
In GATE 2026, the qualifying marks (??q) for the general category candidate in each subject will be
Qualifying marks for GENERAL category = max(25, min(40, ? + ?))
