Careers360: Can you share any preparation strategies with our readers? When should one start their preparation for GATE? How to schedule study time and make timetables?Ajay: As per my advice, every student should follow their own preparation strategy which suits them best. One thing which is important to have a clear understanding of the syllabus and pattern of the exam.
One should start preparing for the exam early, say in their graduation so as to complete the whole syllabus and not to get over-hooked before the exam. Make a preparation time-table as per the availability of time out of college. Study regularly and revise what you study to keep everything in mind.
Careers360: How important do you feel mock tests are and why? Is it true that if one solves the previous year question papers, there is a good chance of cracking the exam successfully?Ajay: Mock test and sample papers are very important in any exam including GATE. I gave mock tests and sample papers before the exam and also throughout the preparation. It helps in evaluating the preparation level, mistakes we are making and time we take for solving the questions.

Careers360: Which are the topics one should focus more on? Kindly give us some detailsAjay: I would advise that students should cover all the topics included in the syllabus as questions in the exam can be asked from any topic. Students should start preparing early to cover the syllabus. As far as important topics are covered, I gave special emphasis to Strength of Materials (SOM), Solid Mechanics and Environmental Engineering.
Careers360: what was the toughest aspect in your GATE preparation?Ajay: There was time in between my preparation when I felt low. At that time, I made sure that I stayed motivated and kept preparing for the exam. I used to talk with my college seniors, friends and my family and they provided me with that essential boost to keepy me on track.
Careers360: What did you do for leisure? Any specific activities that helped you unwind?Ajay: I love music a lot. I use to listen to songs whenever I get time.
Careers360: How should you schedule answering the GATE exam – which section to attempt first and which next? Did you have any strategy? Kindly share your exam experience with us.Ajay: My strategy for attempting questions in the exam was that I first attempted questions which I was sure of. Any incorrect answer could take the rank down so I made sure that whichever question I attempt should be correct to the best of my knowledge.
Careers360: What did you feel was a tough thing for you in the GATE exam?Ajay: The questions in the exam were conceptual and from basic understanding of the topics. Only thing which I focussed on is to attempt as many correct answers as I can and secure a decent score.
Careers360: Any advice for the future aspirants?Ajay: My advice to students who are preparing for the exam is that they must not pressurize themselves to study. Study in a planned manner, stay focussed and take mock tests to analyze the preparation level.
