The official answer key allows the candidates to determine their scores in GATE. In order to start the process, they are supposed to download the answer key and their response sheet. It is through comparing their answers with the official answers that candidates will be able to know the questions that they have answered properly and incorrectly. This comparison is useful in having a general performance before using the marking scheme.
Once the right and wrong answers are located, there should be a marking scheme used by the candidates to define their scores. In Case of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), the correct answers earn +1 or +2 marks based on the question and incorrect answers may earn negative marking of 1/3 or 2/3 marks. In case of a Numerical Answer Type (NAT) question, +1 or +2 marks are rewarded to correct answers and no negative mark is assigned in case of an incorrect answer. There are no marks of unattempted questions. Following these rules perfectly, one will be able to approximate his or her expectations of GATE scores.
