GATE 2026 Marks vs Rank: How is GATE 2026 Score Calculated?

GATE score 2026 will be calculated using the normalization process. Candidates must note that papers like CS and CE will be conducted in more than one session due to a large number of applicants. The GATE score 2026 for such papers will be calculated by normalizing the marks to remove any parity in the difficulty level of the paper. After knowing the marks, candidates can predict the GATE marks vs percentile.

What are Actual GATE Marks and Normalized GATE Marks?

Some GATE papers will be held in multiple shifts. Hence the difficulty level of the exam may vary across different shifts. To overcome this disparity and calculate fair GATE Scores, the authorities use the GATE Normalized method.

    Actual GATE Marks

    • GATE Marks are calculated out of 100 for 65 questions.

GATE Marks vs Rank - Calculation of Normalized Marks for Multi-Session Papers

The GATE exam is conducted in multiple sessions. Hence, for these papers, a suitable normalization is applied to take into account any variation in the difficulty levels of the question papers across different sessions. The normalization is done based on the fundamental assumption that “in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions”.

This assumption is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE 2026 will be large and the procedure for allocation of sessions to candidates was random. Further, it also ensures that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session was of the same order of magnitude.

For the GATE papers which are conducted in only one session, actual marks obtained by the candidates are used for calculating the GATE 2026 exam score. For papers in multi-sessions, GATE normalized marks will be calculated corresponding to the raw marks obtained by a candidate and the GATE score 2026 will be calculated based on the normalized marks.
