National Institute of Technology, Patna is the 18th National Institute of Technology after the rechristening of erstwhile Bihar College of Engineering Patna in 2004. NIT Patna marked its beginning in 1886 with the establishment of pleaders survey training school which was subsequently promoted to Bihar College of Engineering, Patna in 1924. This made it the 6th oldest engineering institute of India which now admits through AIEEE conducted by the CBSE every year. This year the number of seats at NIT Patna is 554 and 62 seats in B. Architecture. The Bihar Institute of Silk & Textiles located at Nathnagar is one of its kind in India offering an undergraduate degree in Silk Technology. The recent addition to quality engineering school is the IIT Patna which would soon be moving to its new campus at Bihta. There are at present seven academic departments at BIT Patna. The other institutes popular among students in the State are Bhagalpur College of Engineering and Muzaffarpur Institute of Technology.
Top disciplines among the eighteen BCECE institutes are Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communications, and Electrical & Electronics Engineering, which together account for 85% of the seats in the State. The most sought after branch, Mechanical Engineering has 1155 seats followed by Computer Science at 940. Automobile Engineering and Textile Engineering have very few seats.
The admission to colleges in Bihar is through the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Exam (BCECE), which is conducted by Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board for granting admissions in Engineering, Medical and Agricultural courses. The examination, BCECE or Bihar CET, was initiated by the State Government of Bihar in accordance with Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Act 1995. The BCECE exam comprises three papers: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of 1-hour duration each. The BCECE is held in two stages, usually in the month of May/June and separate merit list is prepared for general/reserved categories. List of successful candidates is notified in leading State newspapers /colleges. After the declaration of results, the candidates are asked to appear in person for counselling for their choice of branch and institute as per the merit list and on the basis of exercised choice in the application form.
The candidates must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Biology. Candidates who have appeared in the finals of the qualifying exam are also eligible. For engineering stream, there is no minimum age limit. In case of the SC/ST candidate there is a relaxation of 5 years in the upper age limit.
