The competition is very tough, and even small mistakes can make a big difference in your final score. Most students don't lose rank because they aren't smart enough or don't work hard enough. They lose rank because of bad habits that quietly affect their preparation.

GATE isn't cleared by talent alone; thousands of genuinely capable students give the exam every year and still don't make it to a good rank. The difference between a 50th ranker and a 5000th ranker is not intelligence. It's the process: how consistently you revise, how honestly you practise, and how quickly you correct course when something isn't working.

A large number of aspirants jump straight into studying, opening a textbook, watching a random YouTube lecture, switching subjects, without ever writing down what they need to cover and by when. This feels productive in the moment but quietly guarantees an unfinished syllabus two months before the exam.
What to do instead:
Break the whole syllabus into monthly and weekly targets, not just subjects to cover in one day.
Set an easy, doable weekly target (e.g., finish Thermodynamics + solve 60 PYQs by Sunday) rather than a goal like study Thermodynamics.
Revisit and adjust the plan monthly; a plan you never update is just as useless as no plan at all.
Almost every serious GATE aspirant has said, at some point, I'll revise this properly closer to the exam. The problem is that GATE has a large syllabus, and concepts you studied in the initial month will feel unfamiliar by month if you don't revise them again.
What to do instead:
Make revision a daily habit, not a pre-exam ritual. Even 30-40 minutes a day of revisiting old formulas and short notes keeps concepts alive and builds long-term memory.
Dedicate one day each week purely to revisiting what you studied the whole week.
Maintain a single formula-and-shortcut notebook per subject that you update continuously and revise regularly.
GATE is fundamentally a problem-solving exam, not a subject exam. Yet many students read the same chapter three or four times, feeling productive, while avoiding the numerical problems that actually appear on the exam.
What to do instead:
Follow every theory session with problem-solving in the same sitting; theory without an immediate numerical follow-up is useless.
Set a rule: no moving to the next topic until you've solved a minimum number of problems from the current one.
If you're scared of numericals, that's precisely the signal to spend more time there, not less.
Previous year questions are the single most reliable source of what GATE actually tests, the pattern of questions, the way concepts are twisted, and the level of calculation expected. Many students plan to do PYQs at the end, once the syllabus is finished. That day, for most people, never really arrives with enough time left to do them justice.
What to do instead
Solve topic-wise PYQs as soon as you finish that topic, not after the entire syllabus.
After solving a question, don't just check the answer; analyse why a wrong option was wrong and how the correct approach was quicker.
Repeat PYQs from the last 10–15 years at least twice over your preparation, once while learning and once closer to the exam under timed conditions.
Social media, random breaks between study hours, and I'll start seriously from Monday are some of the biggest mistakes of GATE preparation. The gap between students who clear GATE with a top rank and those who don't is discipline in showing up daily, regardless of motivation.
What to do instead:
Identify your peak-focus hours, like early morning works for many, but not everyone, and protect that time fiercely.
Keep your phone physically away during study hours.
Aspirants generally don't pay much attention to Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude because they're not core subjects like your branch subjects, so many aspirants deprioritise them. This is a costly mistake, these two sections together typically make up 25–30% of the total marks and are often easier to score high in than the core subjects, provided you've built the basics properly.
What to do instead:
Practice aptitude on a daily basis rather than doing it just last month.
If your concepts of probability, calculus, or linear algebra are not good, then revise them at the school level.
Many students just write all the formulas on one sheet and memorise them without even reading the concept of that formula, which result that they are unable to solve numerical problems with slight variations in the formula or concept.
What to do instead:
Practice the derivation of the formula, which helps in building the concept, and there is no need to memorise again and again.
Student has habit to look at the solution as soon as they get any problem in solving the question. This habit is not good for building problem-solving skills for the GATE exam.
What to do instead:
Try to solve the problem in two or three attempts before checking the solution.
After checking the solution, try to solve the question in your you rather than copying it.
Students generally leave the topics they feel difficult and keep practising their favourite topics.
This is the biggest mistake they make because in GATE every topic carries some marks, and leaving any topic makes your rank go down by hundreds.
What to do instead:
Use mock tests and chapter-wise tests specifically to improve your weak areas
Create a list of weak topics and practise them again and again until you manage to solve their questions.
Constant study for hours can destroy the cycle of sleep, skipped meals, and constant sitting. This cause aspirants in the form of falling concentration, slower recall, and rising anxiety, exactly when they can least afford it.
What to do instead:
Take 7-8 hours of sleep daily for good concentration
Take part in 20-25 min of physical activity, like a short walk or workout

We can not compare both exams because GATE is for a higher level and covers a vast syllabus, and IIT is for the UG level, covering classes 11 and 12. So, both exam have their own difficulty level.

Standard books contain conceptual knowledge, different problem sets, and derivations that coaching notes don't.
