How to Identify Easy Questions in First 5 Minutes in JEE Main 2026 Session 2?

Students who know how to identify easy questions in first 5 minutes in the JEE Main 2026 April exam tend to finish with time to spare. The first 5 minutes are not for solving. They are purely for scanning and reading the question paper. Open the question paper on the screen and do not start solving yet. Read each question quickly and give every question 5 to 10 seconds. Ask yourself one simple thing – do I know this instantly or not? Based on that, put every question into one of three groups.

    Category

    What It Means

    What to Do

    Green - Easy

    You know the answer instantly

    Solve these first

    Yellow - Medium

You know the concept, but need time

Come back after the green ones

    Red -Hard

You have no idea where to start

    Leave these for last

To understand how to do the above, it is important to make some pointers that help you know which is hard. There are some typical signs for that listed below. Here is what makes a question easy or hard at first glance:

    Easy Question Signs

    Hard Question Signs

    You spot the formula immediately

    It mixes multiple concepts together

The question is short and direct

The question is very long to read

    It tests only one concept

    It involves lengthy calculations

You have solved similar ones before

You are unsure which formula to apply

The numbers are clean and simple

It has tricky conditions or exceptions

How to Identify Easy Questions in First 5 Minutes in JEE Main 2026 April Exam?

Understanding how to attempt maximum questions in JEE Main is not about speed alone but also about picking the right questions. The April session has the same structure - 75 questions. 3 subjects, 25 questions per subject. Each subject has 20 MCQs and 5 numerical questions. NTA spreads easy and hard questions across the paper. They are never grouped together. Here is a subject-wise guide to spotting easy questions fast.

    Subject

    Easy Questions Come From

    Hard Questions Usually Involve

    Physics

Units and Dimensions, Basic Kinematics, Simple Laws of Motion, Direct Current Electricity formulas, Basic Optics

Multiple concepts in one question: Rotational Motion, Wave problems with boundary conditions, Complex circuits

    Chemistry

NCERT factual questions, Periodic table trends, Basic named reactions, Simple mole concept problems

Multi-step reaction mechanisms, Tricky equilibrium calculations, Electrochemistry numericals

    Mathematics

Basic trigonometry, Straight integration, Simple matrix operations, Direct probability, Binomial theorem basics

Multi-step calculus, Complex coordinate geometry, Lengthy determinants, Questions with multiple conditions

It is important to remember that in physics, if you spot a direct formula question, attempt it right away. In chemistry, if it looks like it came straight from NCERT, it is a free mark. In maths, if you cannot see the method in 10 seconds, skip it for now and come back later.

How to Solve JEE Main 2026 Paper Easily?

Students who know how to attempt maximum questions in JEE Main always prioritise Numerical questions first since they carry no negative marking. The key to solving the paper easily is the order in which you attempt subjects. Most students start from Question 1 and go straight to the end. That is a mistake. Start with Chemistry because it is the fastest section for most students. NCERT-based questions take under a minute. Move to Physics next and pick the direct formula questions first. Save Maths for last because it takes the most time. By the time you reach Maths, you have already secured solid marks from the other two subjects. You can give Maths more time without any stress. Heres how to solve JEE Main paper easily:

    Time Block

    What to Do

    0 to 5 minutes

Scan full paper and categorise all questions

    5 to 65 minutes

Solve all easy green questions across all subjects

    65 to 130 minutes

    Attempt medium yellow questions

    130 to 165 minutes

    Try hard red questions selectively

    165 to 180 minutes

Review marked answers and fix silly mistakes

How to Attempt Maximum Questions in JEE Main April Exam?

Attempting maximum questions does not mean attempting all 75. It means attempting every question you can genuinely answer correctly. Do not spend more than 2.5 minutes on any single MCQ. If a question is eating your time, mark it and move on. Come back later if time allows. Use elimination for MCQs by ruling out clearly wrong options first. This narrows your choices very fast and sometimes gets you to the answer without even knowing the full concept. Check your time after every 25 questions. You should be using roughly 60 minutes per 25 questions. Adjust your pace if you are running ahead or behind.

Always attempt all 5 Numerical questions per subject. That is 15 questions across the full paper with zero negative marking. These are the safest attempts in the entire exam. Never skip them regardless of how unsure you feel. An educated guess on a Numerical question costs you nothing and might get you 4 marks. Mistakes to Avoid in the First 5 Minutes in JEE Main 2026 April Exam

Most students waste their biggest strategic advantage by starting to solve immediately. Do not do that. The first 5 minutes of scanning sets up your entire exam. Here is a quick list of what not to do during this phase. Stick to the plan you made in the first 5 minutes. Changing your approach mid-exam creates confusion and wastes precious time.

    • Do not start solving before scanning the full paper

    • Do not spend more than 10 seconds on any question during the scan

    • Do not skip Numerical questions during scanning — many are actually easy

    • Do not let a hard question shake your confidence early on

    • Do not change your strategy halfway through the exam
