With more than 1,35,000 Engineering seats at the undergraduate level (B.E./B.Tech.), Maharashtra is one of the prime destinations for doing Engineering in the country. The growth of engineering education in the state can be well understood by looking at the following table which charts the growth of undergraduate degree courses over the last three and a half decades:

The outstanding colleges of the state include IIT-Powai (Mumbai); Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur; College of Engineering, Pune(COEP); and Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai. International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Pune; Mumbai Institute of Chemical Technology (UDCT), Mumbai; and Sinhgad College of Engineering (SCOE), Pune are some the other prominent colleges in the state.

With approximately 30,000 seats, Mechanical Engineering is the branch having maximum capacity in the state, closely followed by Electronics & Communication Engineering which has around 27,500 seats and Computer Science Engineering which has more than 25,000 seats. Other notable branches are Civil Engineering (15,000+ seats) and Information Technology (approx. 13,500 seats). Keeping in toe with the advancement in Technology and developments in new areas of Technology, many new courses in the new and emerging areas have been started in Maharashtra to cater to the needs of the industry and society. Some of the ‘Non-Conventional Courses’  started at the degree level include Industrial Electronics, Computer Technology, Food Technology, Bio-Medical Engineering., Construction Technology, Dyestuff Technology etc. have been started.
