NTA releases the JEE Main 2026 result in the form of a percentile. It is the normalised score of every candidate based on their performance relative to the performance of the other candidates in the same session. This is done to ensure fairness in the JEE Main result as the exam is conducted in various sessions.
Raw marks in the JEE Main 2026 exam are the marks that the candidate has scored based on the correct and incorrect responses given in the JEE Main exam. The JEE Main 2026 total marks are 300.
Raw marks are calculated using the formula:
Raw Marks =(4× Correct Answers) − (1× Incorrect Answers)
| Response Type | Marks Awarded |
|---|---|
Correct answer | +4 marks |
Incorrect answer | −1 mark |
Unattempted question | 0 marks |
Questions withdrawn by NTA | +4 marks to all candidates |
Candidates can refer to the formulas below to calculate the JEE Main 2026 percentile as well as the percentile scores of each subject.
Percentile Score of a Candidate = 100 x (Number of candidates who secured a raw score (or actual score) equal to or less than the candidate)/(Total number of candidates who appeared in that session)
Percentile score | Calculation |
|---|---|
Total Percentile (T1P): | (100 x No. of candidates from the session with a raw score equal to or less than the T1 score) / Total No. of candidates appeared in the session |
Mathematics Percentile (M1P) | (100 x No. of candidates appeared from the session with a raw score equal to or less than the M1 score in Mathematics) / Total No. of candidates appeared in the session |
Physics Percentile (P1P) | (100 x No. of candidates appeared from the session with raw score equal to or less than P1 score in Physics) / Total No. of candidates appeared in the session |
Chemistry Percentile (C1P): | (100 x No. of candidates appeared from the session with raw score equal to or less than C1 score in Chemistry) / Total No. of candidates appeared in the session |

55 marks in the JEE Main exam are a low score. If the candidate has attempted only session 1, they should also attempt the JEE Main 2026 session 2 exam, as NTA will consider the best score out of the two attempts. If the JEE Main score is low even after both sessions of the exam, candidates can use their JEE Main scores to apply for regional institutes. Alternatively, they can also attempt the entrance exams conducted by private universities so as not to waste a year of their education.
