They are getting ready to compete in July 2012 in the competition called Formula Student in the UK abd call themselves ‘Team Defianz’. A bunch of enthusiastic Engineering students studying in Delhi Technological University (erstwhile Delhi College of Engineering), they spend most of their free time in what seems like a auto garage slogging to bring the object of their common dream to reality. Meet Dipanshu Jain, Atishay Jain, Samarth Vats, Mihir Bhambri, , Dhruv Kant, Swapnil Bhalla, some of the key members of this 17-member team which includes 8 students from the 2nd Year, though most of them belong to 3rd year Mechanical Engineering branch. One of them proudly shows an engine suspended from what look like stirrups to the average man. “This is the Honda CBR 600 cc engine at the heart of our car, it gives a decent 70 BHP of power,” he explains.
The formula car is defined as ‘a single-seater, open cockpit, open wheels racing car’. More than 150 teams from all over the world participate in the competition. “The members not only learn on the technical front, they also imbibe qualities like leadership, teamwork, co-operation, time management and perseverance,” says
Dipanshu, the team leader. The total estimated expenditure of making the car, testing the car and travelling and participating in the event is estimated to be INR 24 lakhs this year. The sponsors who are helping out the team include Jaypee Greens, Indian Oil, Loctite, Soma, Brembo India and Air India amongst others.
“The Defianz Racing team has been the first ever student initiative in the entire country and has been the undisputed leader since. The team has bagged many awards in the past,” adds Samarth, head of the Engine & Transmission department. It turns out that the team in its very first attempt in 2003 bagged the “FISITA-Best Endeavour Award” thereby making a mark for itself. In the Cost Analysis event, the team managed 2nd position in 2006, 3rd in 2009, and 7th in 2010. In 2008, the team was adjudged 3rd in the Design event. The 2009 car managed to get the Best Design in Asia. It was also ranked 11th by weight all over the world as the team managed to reduce over 50 kg of weight and made it one of the lightest cars at the competition.
