Lateral Entry vs Regular B.Tech: JEE, Academics & Placements

    Team Careers360Updated on 16 Mar 2026, 03:20 PM IST

Lateral Entry vs Regular B.Tech: Students aiming for engineering are often faced with the decision of choosing a regular B.Tech Course after grade 12th or opting for lateral entry after a three-year diploma. This is the common problem faced by engineering aspirants. While in both cases, you will get the same degree, the social life, academics, placements, and the chances of lateral entry into renowned institutes might differ.

Admission to IITs & Other Top Institutes Through Lateral Entry Is Not Possible via JEE

Aspirants with diploma degrees are eligible to appear for JEE Mains or JEE Advanced, as even with the diploma degree, they are considered equivalent to 12th grade. But if the diploma holders qualify for the exam, they will not get lateral entry directly into the second year; instead, they will be allowed in the first year of the B.Tech course, as everyone else.

JOSA Counselling and Premier Central Institutes do not have a Lateral Entry Provision

Although JoSAA Counselling/Premier Institutes do not provide admission to diploma holders, most of the state government colleges like DTU, Jadavpur University, and private institutions do offer admission opportunities to diploma holders via their own entrance test or state-level tests like LET or JELET.

Academic Challenges: Lateral Entry vs Regular B.Tech

    • Regular students who cracked JEE and entered first year have already studied two years of advanced algebra, calculus, and physics. When diploma holders enter the third semester, they will have to face “Engineering Mathematics 3”, and this is where about 80 per cent of lateral entry students face difficulties and may get backlogs.

    • Besides this, there is an advantage for the diploma holders. As they have already completed a diploma degree so they have more practical knowledge and hands-on-experience than regular students.

Comparing the Social Life of Lateral Entry and Regular B.Tech Students

Regular B.tech students have already done one year courses and have built a strong campus network. They have formed friends, connected groups or teams while lateral entry students may feel disconnected initially, but gradually they can also overcome this social gap by actively interacting with the teams, participating in technical fests and other activities.

Placement and Career Opportunities: Lateral Entry vs Regular B.Tech

CSE and IT Companies: Product-driven companies such as Google and Amazon do not consider the background, 12th Scores or any diploma degree, they just prioritize the coding skills and DSA knowledge of the candidates and based on their skills and knowledge they offer placement to the deserving candidates.

Core Engineering Branches (Electrical, Mechanical & Civil): Companies such as Tata Motors and L&T usually give priority to lateral entry students because of their strong practical hands-on experience and better technical knowledge.

Small Barrier: Some high-volume IT recruiting companies utilize automated filters in which only students with at least 60% marks are eligible. This can create hurdles for lateral entry students. But College TPC (Training and Placement Cells)

Some mass-recruiting IT service firms use automated filters requiring minimum 60 per cent in 10th and 12th grades, which can create issues for diploma holders. However, college placement cells usually step in to rectify this issue.

Comparing the Key Aspects: Lateral Entry vs Regular B.Tech

    Aspect

    Regular B.Tech Students

    Lateral Entry Students

    Admission Year

    First Year

    Second Year

    Preparation Background

2 years of advanced math, physics, and algebra

    Diploma-level core engineering subjects

    Academic Challenge

    Familiar with syllabus progression

Struggle with advanced math (Engineering Math 3)

    Practical Knowledge

    Limited (first exposure to labs)

Strong hands-on experience with machines and microcontrollers

    Social Integration

Established friend groups and project teams

Initially, outsiders integrate by 4th semester

    Placement Preference (Core)

    Standard preference

Often preferred by core companies (L&T, Tata Motors)

    Placement Preference (IT)

    Based on coding skills

Based on coding skills; diploma irrelevant for product-based companies

    Admission in IITs via JEE

    Yes

No (only first year admission possible)

Lateral entry is not a drawback; rather, it offers a distinct path to a B.Tech program that requires extra efforts, particularly in Mathematics. At the same time, diploma holders generally have valuable practical experience and industrial exposure, which can prove to be advantageous for them in the core engineering streams.

Social integration is achievable with proactive participation in campus activities. Premier institutes do not offer lateral entry admissions through JEE Mains or Advanced, but state and private colleges do. Placement outcomes depend more on skills and experience than on the mode of entry.

Have a question related to JEE Main ?

Parala Maharaja College is govt affiliated. As per rules ZZ category which means outside Odisha cannot apply for seats under the official counselling. I wold advise to go to the college and ask for better guidance. The cutoffs for 2025 are not up o the OJEE site but 2024 also

Decent chances actually. However, you havent given the category as well as home state.

If we look at the general category, you have chances in newer IIITs and NITs as well . but again this differs for branch too.
