The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, now in Uttarakhand has a remarkable history. It was the first engineering college in India which was established in the United Province in 1847 for training civil engineers at Roorkee, which made use of the workshops and public buildings that were erected for the Upper Ganges Canal. James Thomason, the then Lt. Governor of North West Provinces, made efforts towards opening of the engineering college, and as a result on 19 October 1847, Lt. R Maclagan of Bengal Engineers was appointed Principal of this college of civil engineering. Uttarakhand also has noted institutes and Dehradun, in particular, is emerging as an education hub of the State with nine universities offering education in different disciplines. Another institute is the Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya at Haridwar that aims to revive the ancient Indian Gurukula System of education (219 seats). There are now 33 institutes in the State offering undergraduate programmes in engineering with a total sanctioned intake of 12,945 excluding some prominent institutes such as IIT Roorkee (1159 seats); the new National Institute of Technology (NIT) Uttarakhand (120 seats) at Srinagar, Garhwal; Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University; Graphic Era University; and University of Petroleum and Energy Studies both in Dehradun.
