Rajasthan, the incredible state known for its rich heritage, culture and tourism is rapidly catching up in providing higher and technical education, even though a sizeable number of institutes have been set-up with not much emphasis on quality of education. Institutes known in engineering stream include Malviya National Institute of Technology which holds prominence for being established in 1963 in the ‘pink city’ as a joint venture of Govt. of India and Govt. of Rajasthan and is rated amongst top engineering colleges in India. A renowned institute in the same league is BITS Pilani. Setting their feet in the State are institutes such as IIT Rajasthan at Jodhpur; LNMIT, Jaipur, BIT Jaipur, Manipal University, Jaipur and NIIT University at Neemrana. Jaipur district accounts for the maximum number of intake with nearly 50% of engineering colleges in the State. A striking feature in Rajasthan is the rapid expansion of private universities both in the State University and Deemed University categories. In 2008-09 there were 55 institutes linked to RPET offering 23410 seats but in a span of four years, this rose to 128 institutes with nearly 56,000 student-intake in BE/BTech courses. Some of these institutes that do not figure among the 128 RPET institutes are Amity Rajasthan (720 seats), Bhagwant University (990); KN Modi University, Newal (780); LNMIT (300); Jagannath University, Jaipur (930); Jayoti Vidyapeeth Women’s University, Jaipur (570); Jodhpur National University (420); Mahatma Jyoti Rao Phoole University, Jaipur (1760); and Mewar University, Chittorgarh (960). The intake is not known for many including BIT Jaipur, Manipal Jaipur, NIMS University, NIIT University etc.
Most of student intake (72%) is in four disciplines: Electronics & Communications (12,145); Computer Science (11,503); Mechanical (8,695) and Electrical (7,629). Civil (6,638), IT (5,370) and Electrical & Electronics (1,830) are the other branches which have a fair share of seats
Admission to engineering colleges is through Rajasthan Pre Engineering Test followed by counseling with eligibility to clear class XII. RPET is a single exam of 3 hour duration containing 40 objective type questions in Physics, Chemistry and Maths each. There is no negative marking for wrong answer. Apart from RPET admission to some institutes is through AIEEE and BITSAT (for BITS –Pilani).
Government of Rajasthan prescribes (except in case of Private Unaided Institutions) reservation of seats with 16% for SC, 12% for ST and 21% for non creamy layer OBC category. There is also a provision for horizontal reservation of 3% for physically handicapped, 25% for women and 3% for dependents of defence killed/ ex-servicemen/ Gallantry award winners. 5% of total intake is for Kashmiri migrants.
