Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat was established in June 1961 as one of the twenty Regional Engineering Colleges. It was renamed as National Institute of Technology and given the status of Deemed University. An IIT has also been established at Gandhinagar since 2008 with an intake of 120 seats in three B.Tech programmes: Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Other noteworthy institutes in the State are Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT) that offers a unique four-year undergraduate course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Technology (Information and Communication Technology); Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya, Anand; Dharamsin Desai University, Nadiad; Faculty of Technology & Engineering, MS University at Vadodara; Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University; and LD Engineering College at Ahmedabad among others which has a huge intake of 1140 seats. Engineering institutes with large intake also include Parul Institute of Technology Limda at Vadodara (1020), Government Engineering College Modasa (840) and Shantilal Shah College at Bhavnagar (780). The students can also vie for 1100 odd seats in Chemical Engineering in the State. The pie diagram gives a break-up of sanctioned intake across different disciplines. The major branches in ‘other’ disciplines comprise Electrical & Electronics, Applied Electronics, Production Engineering, Metallurgy, Biomedical and Textile Technology.
In 2012-13, the distribution of seats is as follows:
16 Government Institutes: 9030
3 Grant-in-aid Engineering Institutes: 1194
Birla Vishvakarma Maha Vidhyalaya, Vallabhvidyanagar, Anand
Faculty of Technology & Engineering, MS University, Vadodara
Faculty of Technology, Dharamsinh Desai University (DDU), Nadiad
1 Public Private Partnership based Institute: 240
Gujarat Power Engineering & Research, Institute, Mehsana
83 Self-financing Institutes (SFI): 33539
2 New Engineering Institutes: 240
In total, there are 105 engineering institutes that admit through the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) and have in all a sanctioned intake of 44243 seats in the undergraduate programme in the State.
Most of the student intake (approximately 80%) is in five disciplines: Mechanical Engineering (22% or 9090 seats); Electronics & Communications (17% or 7320 seats); Computer Science (17% or 7200 seats); Civil (14% or 6020 seats) and Electrical (12% or 5429 seats). Information Technology with 3525 and Chemical Engineering with 1054 seats respectively in different institutes are the next two sought after branches by the students in Gujarat. Instrumentation and Control with roughly 800 seats and Automobile Engineering with around 500 seats are the other disciplines worth mentioning.
Students can gain admission in Gujarat engineering Colleges through the GUJ-CET or Gujarat Common Entrance Test conducted by the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC). It supervises and controls the admission process for all the professional courses. Since last year ACPC has been conducting online counseling for seats. GUJ-CET is open only to the candidates who belong to Gujarat. The ACPC ensures that admission in the government seats and management seats are made as per merit list prepared and no student is admitted against the management seats unless his/her name appears in the merit list. Once the candidates register online on a user-friendly portal: www.gujacpc.nic.in and fill in the necessary details, a provisional merit numer is allotted with a specific date. A unique user-id and passwaord is generated. The candidates are then able to see the choices available to him/her as per the eligibility so that they can fill the choice of their institute and preferred course and also set their priority. The choice of participating in subsequent counselling rounds is also possible provided the candidate gives a consent. The final allotment of seats and the applicable fee, information letter etc is all possible on the same portal.
For admission to SVNIT, Surat, the students have to appear for the AIEEE which reserves 85% seats for candidates from Gujarat and approximately 15% of the seats are for outsiders. For 240 seats at DAIICT, the admission is again on the basis of AIEEE. Same is the case for Institute of Technology, Nirma University that has 600 seats. However, for IIT Gandhinagar, the admission is through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
Candidate should be an Indian National and should have passed/appeared the HSC (Std. XII) examination of Gujarat State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent examination AND Secured minimum 50% marks in the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics added together AND obtained a valid (non zero) score in subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics added together at GUJ-CET.
The minimum academic qualification for admission through AIEEE is a pass in final examination of 10+2(Class XII) or its equivalent referred to as the qualifying exam. Those appearing in 10+2 (Class XII) final or equivalent exam may also appear in AIEEE for consideration of provisional admission.
