Known as a State for revolutionizing the green revolution in agriculture, Punjab has over 100 engineering institutes offering over 43,200 seats at the undergraduate level only. Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, one among the new IITs has also started functioning in the State. The other reputed institute is Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology at Longowal which is fully funded by Govt of India. Thapar University, Patiala offers 860 seats including 30 seats in Mechatronics, 40 in Biotechnology and 75 in Chemical Engineering wherein the admissions are conducted through both AIEEE and CET. Lovely Professional University, Phagwara too has a huge intake (960) available for admission through the AIEEE.
Most of the student intake (approx. 90%) is in five disciplines: Computer Science (9,892); Electronics & Communications (9,802); Mechanical (8,634); Civil (4,665) and Information Technology (4,036). Two other disciplines have a fair share of intake: Electrical (1,920) and Electrical & Electronics (900). The ‘other’ category comprises Chemical, Applied Instrumentation & Control; Electronics; Automobile; Industrial Engineering; Biotechnology; Food Technology; Aerospace; Textile and Production–all having less than 300 seats. For an agriculture rich state, there are only 62 seats in Food Technology at SLIET; however there are more institutes diploma/certificate in the said discipline.
The PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh was initially established as Mugalpura Engineering College at Lahore (now in Pakistan) in 1921. In 1953, the college shifted to its present campus in Chandigarh and got the Deemed University status in 2009. The institution was renamed as PEC University of Technology. University Institute of Engineering & Technology is another institute that offers 580 seats. of which 75 are in Chemical Engineering and 20 in Food Technology. Among the three CET institutes in Chandigarh, most of the intake is in Electronics & Communications (180), Computer Science (170) and Mechanical (140 seats).
Students can gain admission to Engineering Colleges in Punjab & Chandigarh through the following routes:
CET Common Entrance Test conducted by Punjab Technical University gives access to approx. 76% of the seats in the region.
AIEEE: One needs to appear for seats in institutes that are affiliated to Panjab University.
JEE is to be taken for admission to IIT Ropar and IISER Mohali
For admission to the Engineering / Architecture Courses, 85% seats shall be open to the candidates from within the State and 15% will be open to candidates from outside the State. Candidates should have appeared in the Combined Entrance Test conducted by Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar.
a) For Engineering Courses
All those candidates who have passed the 10+2 examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one the following subjects: Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science and Biology
b) For Architecture Course (Candidates seeking admission B. Arch. are not required to take CET)
A candidate should have passed or appeared in any one of the following qualifications: 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized Board with Mathematics as a subject of study by securing 50% marks in aggregate.
