Admission Criteria: Entrance Test-AIEEE, thereafter centralised counseling by the Department of Technical Education (DTE); AIEEE (NIT Hamirpur; UIIT Shimla, JUIT Wakanghat etc.); JEE (IIT Mandi)
No. of Engineering Colleges: 21 + 5
Total Sanctioned Intake: 7,200 + 1,497 = 8,697
Major Disciplines: Electronics & Communications; Computer Science; Mechanical Engineering
Noteworthy Institutions: NIT, Hamirpur; IIT Mandi; JLNGEC, Sundarnagar; UIIT Shimla (HPU); IITT College of Engineering, Kala Amb
Established in 1986 as Regional Engineering College, National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur has the largest sanctioned intake of 462 in the state, though it is the least among the older 20 NITs. The NIT Hamirpur also has Architecture, which is the youngest department set up in 2000. In the twelve districts of the State, only six have engineering colleges. While Sirmour district has the largest intake, Mandi has the maximum number of institutions. The district also has an IIT which at present has an intake of 40 each in three branches-Computer Science, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The increase in engineering intake (nearly three fold) in Himachal Pradesh has been in the last three years. Around eighty percent of engineering institutions are private/self-financed. Recently, the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development’s (MHRD) Department of Higher Education has decided to establish Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) Model in district Una. As per the approved scheme, the Central Government, the State Government and Industry will be stakeholders in the project.
The selections are done on merit of AIEEE marks and rank secured through a centralized counseling process conducted by Director Technical Education Himachal Pradesh (Sundernagar). The vacant seats, if any, are filled at the discretion of individual institutions (management quota) after the last round of counseling through a public announcement in leading and local newspapers. The ‘general seats’ account for 85% of the total intake while ‘all India quota’ constitute the rest. Management quota including NRI seats are 15% of the 85% ‘general seats’.
To be eligible for admission in Engineering /Technology courses in the Government or Private un-aided Engineering institutes of Himachal Pradesh or for nomination to others State on the seats allotted to Himachal Pradesh (Beneficiary State) by the MHRD, candidates need to secure at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and 50% in aggregate in 10+2 examination. The compulsory subjects must be Physics and Mathematics along with any one of these optional subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science or Biotechnology. Candidates willing to get admitted in previous years, were asked to obtain minimum 10% of total marks in AIEEE conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, in case of general/open category and 5% of the total marks in case of all reserve categories including sub-reserve categories of general/open Category.
Nearly 80 percent of the total sanctioned intake in the State (for institutions under DTE counseling) are spread over four disciplines: Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering and Electronics & Communications Engineering. While in the twenty-one institutes linked to DTE, Himachal Pradesh and conducting admissions through the centralized counseling process, Mechanical Engineering has 1530 seats; Civil Engineering and Computer Science offer 1500 and 1350 seats respectively in all the institutes. The ‘others’ category comprise branches such as Information Technology, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Production Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Textiles Engineering, Automobile and Chemical Engineering. Jawhar Lal Nehru Government Engineering College located in Sundarnagar offers 60 seats in Textile Technology and the University Institute of Information Technology (UITT) at Shimla offers 60 seats in Information Technology. The colleges with intake of over 350 are Institute of Engineering & Emerging Technolgy at Baddi; IITT College of Engineering at Kala Amb and Green Hills Engineering College at Kumarhatti in Solan district. Of the twenty-one institutes linked to the DTE, eighteen are in the private domain. The DTE also has administrative and financial control over these institutions.
