In the age of AI and ML, where continuous skilling up is becoming the norm. Several EdTech companies provide short-skilling courses that help students to become more employable. Certain EdTech companies have gone further and also started collaborating with institutions and universities, where the degree is provided by the university or the institution, and skilling and making students employable is the responsibility of these EdTech companies. Newton School of Technology is one such company.
As it is a merger between UGC authorised degree granting institutions and an EdTech company, it becomes extremely important for students to understand what they are getting into. What are the risks that are involved, what kind of ROI can a student expect, and what a student must be careful about when taking admission in this college?

In order to get the answer to some of the questions mentioned above, we need to understand what kind of EdTech company Newton School of Technology is.
One of the key features of this model is that the Edtech Company designs and teaches the course.
There is no affiliation to any university, where a certificate is given, which is not a degree
The key feature or the deciding factor in terms of student success is the brand perception of the company by the employer or the recruiter. There is no regulatory authority’s recognition.

The primary characteristic of this model is that the EdTech company is in partnership with an existing, accredited university.
The university acts as the degree-granting authority, whereas it is the responsibility of the EdTech company to work on the skilling and employability of the student.
One of the key features is that the student graduates with a recognised degree.
In this model, it is the responsibility of the Edtech to build physical infrastructure, classrooms, and labs, where the campus is considered a traditional college. They have campuses all across the country.
Here, the degree is given by distance/open learning institution.
There is a key gap in the credentials of such institutions because the degree does not carry the legal weight of a campus-mode program. There is a high risk involved in such models.

The Newton School of Technology follows the Embedded University Model system, where it partners with a university for degree granting purpose and it helps students with skilling and employability.
The Embed University Model system also has its own risk, hence it becomes important for you to ask certain questions so that you, as a student, are aware of what you are getting into.
Are you paying the university or the edtech company? If you are paying the university, then you are secured because the university is answerable to you and, by extension, the regulatory authority. If by any chance, you are paying the EdTech company, you might lose the initiative if things go wrong, as the company is regulated by a government authority.
This is again a very important question you should ask yourself. Are you studying in a skilling academy’s campuses somewhere, or are you studying in a university ecosystem with all the other students studying and staying there? If you are in the university ecosystem, then it is a safe option for you as a student. This is a very important question, whether you are studying in a skilling academy somewhere or you are studying in university campus?
If there is a situation where something goes wrong, who is answerable to you? Is it the university that is responsible, where you are interacting and engaging with it, or is it the Skilling Academy?
These three are very important questions that you should ask yourself before joining. A student should also be clear about what they expect and require from such courses, including learning and skills, and an employability guarantee. Guarantee on a job and placement, or just getting a degree? EdTechs such as Newton School of Technology are a good option because they help students to skill up and improve their employability.
As mentioned earlier, Newton School of Technology is an EdTech company that has been helping students by providing skilling-up courses and helping them become more employable. The primary reason for creating Newton School of Technology could be to fill the gap, where skilling and employability were an issue. This is where Newton School of Technology comes into the picture. On its own, short-term courses providing skilling and increasing a student’s employability are a great option. However, the risk factors increase greatly when the degree comes in the discussion.
Currently, the Newton School of Technology also works through the Embedded University Model system, where in the degree is provided by affiliated universities, that are affiliated and the onus of skilling and making the students employable is on Newton School of Technology.

Newton is affiliated with four universities that provide degrees to students. These are
Newton School of Technology claims in its brochure to be partnered with these four universities. Now the issue arises when the same claim is not reciprocated by some of the universities mentioned by Newton. Rishihood University and St. Mary’s Hyderabad both claim to partner with Newton School of Technology for their certain degree programmes. This means that both these universities will take responsibility for the claims made by Newton School of Technology for those particular courses. These two universities are very clear that they are partnering with companies outside the education ecosystem to make their students industry-ready.

However, the other two universities, Ajeenkya DY Patil University, Pune, and S-Vyasa University, Bengaluru, don’t make any such claims on their website. When only one side claims the partnership, it means that the university can simply step back, and if there is a problem, leaving the student in a precarious position. Also, UGC has started sending out notices to certain universities regarding their collaborations. Considering the fee involved in these courses, it is a huge financial risk as and eventually a career risk that can set the student back a few years.
As a student, you need to understand that in India, a graduation or a post-graduation degree has to be granted by a university, and it cannot franchise its work to some other entity outside. The problem starts when such companies hold on to the students for four years with a promise of a degree, skilling up, and employment.
There are EdTech companies such as NIIT, which provide short certification skilling-up courses, and they are doing a good job in skilling up students and making them employable; they don’t make any other claims. In this sense, they are very transparent about what they are providing the student.
DY Patil University's internship reports show good student employability, participation, and stipend.

The university recorded a 93.7 per cent internship and placement rate, with 94 students receiving internship offers. Interns earned an average stipend of Rs 23,169 per month, while the highest stipend was Rs 1.25 lakh. It also shows that the top 25 per cent of students got an average stipend of around Rs. 38,080. But if we reverse calculate it, then the rest of the 75 per cent of students got an average stipend of Rs. 18,660.
The issue here is that it is just from DY Patil; we do not have the data for the rest of the four universities. Also, the cohort size is about 100 students. Students need to understand that it is easier to get internships for a small batch of students, but when we scale to about 1,000, or take into account all four universities, then how does Newton School of Technology fare? Seven students from batch 100 still did not secure internships. Now, imagine it to be a batch of 1000 students, the number of students with no internships will also go up significantly.
There are a number of YouTube videos from various influencers who talk about the placements at Newton School of Technology. Newton engages with multiple influencers to promote its brand on social media. When we did our research on what kind of information the influencers are providing the students on social media, we found that they have been talking about the highest package being Rs. 64 lakhs.

The issue here is that the Newton School of Technology’s BTech batch started in 2023; the first batch has not even passed out, so there is no question of the highest placement package being Rs. 64 lakhs. The highest LPA is a blatant lie. You will have to wait till the next year to get to know the highest package. It is a clear case of clickbait where they are inducing students to get into Newton School of Technology.
One of the videos from an influencer also claims that Rs. 2.5 lakhs was the highest stipend for B.Tech CSE and AI.

When we checked further, we found that the claim was made based on the Full Stack Program, which has nothing to do with the Newton School of Technology. It is completely different from the four-year program. This is the kind of misleading information that students should be aware of before taking admission in such programmes.

Here, it should be the responsibility of such Edtech companies to tell influencers not to lie. In the motivation to sell the programme to the student, they should not mislead, as they are bringing the student to the platform based on a lie!
When you are dealing with an informed audience, it is a different thing, but when you are dealing with students, one has to be more careful, cautious and transparent. This is where regulatory bodies step in. Just like how small investors are protected by SEBI, UGC too should protect the student community from such practices.

If students are getting into a good college that gives them a degree, ensures they are skilled enough, makes them employable, provides good placement, and is UGC approved, then students should go for that college.
If a student is getting into a tier two or a tier three college, which is granting a degree, but not helping in skilling up and making the student employable or the placements are not guaranteed, Newton is a good option for such students.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Newtons is a reputed company as far as skilling and training up, and employability is concerned. It has been there for some time, was started around 2016. Their full-stack development programme came out in 2019.
First of all, you are not studying at Newton, you are studying at one of the partner universities. So you will be getting the degree from the university that you choose through Newton School of Technology. It also depends on which university’s alumni you want to be called.
The business model of Newton School of Technology is such that they will work very hard to make sure you are skilled up and employable enough to secure a placement. It is the only way that their business model will survive. No one can guarantee placement, even IITs can’t, but the assurance is that Newton will work very hard to make you skilled and employable.
No, it is a lie, because the first batch has not even passed out. The claim of the Rs. 64 lakh over social media is a blatant lie.
Whatever we have researched so far does not point to the Rs. 2.5 lakhs stipend placement was done for the Btech batch. We did find the Rs. 2.5 lakh in the Fullstack Development skilling up course.
The risk lies in the partnership. In case UGC were to talk to these universities, the universities that are not admitting the partnership with Newton might pull back, and you, as a student, will be at a place where you might be skilled and employable, but you might not have a degree. Again, this is a possibility because UGC notices have gone to certain Edtech companies questioning the partnerships with the universities.
