IIT Madras BS in Electronic Systems is a 4-year degree that comprises three levels. A student has to successfully complete all three levels to get the BS Degree in Electronic Systems from IIT Madras. In each term, a student can register for a maximum of four theory courses depending on the time they can dedicate to the programme. A student doing this programme full time is recommended to take 4 per term while working professionals and students pursuing any other academic programme can take 2 or 3 courses.
IIT Madras Admissions 2026 Open for BS Electronic Systems (May Session): Last Date, Eligibility, Fee
Candidates who have passed Class 12 or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics are eligible to apply for the IIT Madras BS Electronic Systems programme.
School students who have appeared for their Class 11 final exams can also apply for the programme. Those who qualify can join the programme after passing Class 12.

Admission to IIT Madras BS in Electronic Systems is done based on Regular Entry and JEE-based Entry.
Regular entry: All eligible candidates can get admission to the Foundation Level of the programme by completing the qualifier process.
JEE-based entry: Candidates who have qualified for JEE Advanced 2025 or 2026 can get direct admission and register for courses in the Foundation level of the BS programme.
The IIT Madras Qualifier Process for BS in Electronic Systems is designed for candidates who want to get admission to the Foundation Level of the programme through regular entry.
The qualifier process includes four weeks of coursework based on lecture videos, assignments, and live sessions of the four foundational level courses: English I, Math for Electronics I, Electronic Systems Thinking and Circuits, and Introduction to C Programming, that will be provided through the institute’s online portal.
Candidates have to submit an assignment every week for grading in each course.

After the completion of the 4-week qualifier process, there will be a qualifier exam at the end of the 4 weeks. The IIT Madras qualifier exam is conducted for eligible candidates based on the content covered in the 4 weeks of study. The IIT Madras BS qualifier exam is conducted in-person over four hours.
In each course, the average of the best 2 out of the first 3 assignment scores will be calculated. Only those who get the minimum required average scores in all four courses can appear for the Qualifier Exam.

After scoring the minimum required average scores, only eligible candidates can appear for the IIT Madras qualifier exam and will receive the hall ticket. To pass the qualifier exam, candidates have to achieve a minimum average qualifier exam score and minimum qualifier exam score in each course.

For candidates who have already cleared class 12 board exams, the IITM BS qualifier marks will be valid for the three terms that come after the qualifier exam date (the continuing term and the next one) for the learner to register to the Foundation level.
For students who attempt the qualifier exam while in school, doing their Std 12, the qualifier marks will be valid for three terms to continue with the Foundation level.
Students who pass the Qualifier Exam will be allowed to register for Foundation Level. However, there will be limitations on the number of courses a learner is allowed to register for in their first term based on the Average Qualifier Exam Score (M).

Candidates who have qualified to attempt JEE Advanced in 2025 or 2026 are deemed to have directly qualified and can register for courses in the Foundation level and start the programme.
Such students will first register to the programme paying the registration fees of Rs 4,000, with suitable waivers for students in the category of SC/ST/PwD with >40% disability and then once the documents are verified and their registration is approved, they will proceed to pay the fees for courses they choose to register for.
The registration of students, applying through this category, who do not appear for Quiz 1 AND Quiz 2 in the first term will stand cancelled.
Candidates who were eligible to appear for the qualifier exam, but did not pass the qualifier exam or were absent for it, can re-attempt the qualifier exam in the same term without having to repeat the assignments.
Anyone who is eligible can apply by filling in the re-attempt application form that opens up immediately after the qualifier results are announced and paying the re-attempt fee.

Candidates willing to enrol in IIT Madras BS Electronic Systems programme can get admission to the Foundation Level after clearing the qualifier process.
