    IIT Madras BS Degree Eligibility: Who Can Apply?

    Anyone who has completed Class 12 or equivalent can apply for IIT Madras BS degree. Candidates must have studied English, Mathematics, or Physics in Class 10th and 12th.

    List of Accepted Class 12 Equivalents

    Candidates can apply for IIT Madras BS degree with Class 12th equivalents, which are as follows:

    • A Diploma recognised by AICTE or a state board of technical education of at least 3 year duration.
    • Any Public School / Board / University examination in India or in any foreign country recognised as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
    • Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
    • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London / Cambridge / Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
    • High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
    • Higher Secondary Certificate vocational examination.
    • Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognised Board / University.
    • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.

    IIT Madras BS Degree Admission Process 2026 - Regular Entry

    Admission to IIT Madras BS degree is done based on the qualifier examination. Candidates who have appeared for the most recent JEE Advanced exam are required to clear the qualifier process, which involves a 4-week of qualifier preparation and a qualifier exam.

    Regular Entry - Qualifier Exam

    Candidates applying for an IIT Madras online degree through the regular entry must go through the qualifier process to get admission to the Foundation Level.

    Qualifier Preparation

    The IIT Madras BS degree qualifier process includes four weeks of coursework based on lecture videos, assignments, and live sessions of the four foundational level courses: English I, Mathematics for Data Science I, Statistics for Data Science I, and Computational Thinking. Candidates are required to submit an assignment every week for grading in each course.

    At the end of the 4 weeks, eligible candidates will appear in a qualifier exam based on the content covered in the 4 weeks of study.

    In each course, the average of the best 2 out of the first 3 assignment scores will be calculated. Only those who get the minimum required average assignment scores in all four courses will be eligible to appear for the IIT Madras Qualifier Exam.

    IIT Madras Qualifier Exam and Passing Criteria

    Learners who are eligible to appear for the IIT Madras qualifier exam will receive the hall ticket. The IIT Madras qualifier exam is conducted in-person at the end of 4 weeks of coursework. The duration of the qualifier exam is 4 hours, covering all 4 courses.

    To pass the IIT Madras Qualifier Exam, the learner has to secure a minimum average qualifier exam score and a minimum qualifier exam score in each course individually.

    What After Passing the IIT Madras Qualifier Exam?

    After passing the IIT Madras qualifier exam, candidates will be allowed to register for Foundation Level. There will be limitations on the number of courses to register for the first term based on the average qualifier exam score (M).

    JEE Based Entry

    Candidates can apply for IIT Madras BS degree through the current year's JEE Advanced. They can get direct admission to an online degree at IIT Madras. Here are the steps to apply for IIT Madras BS Degree through JEE exam:

    • Complete the application form when it opens up
    • After the verification of the proof for JEE advanced, candidates become eligible to directly start the foundation level courses.
    • Candidates have to register for courses (English 1, Maths 1, Statistics 1, Computational Thinking) by paying the course fees.
    • They can register for 1/2/3/4 courses depending on the time they would have to study.
    • The institute will inform the candidates when they can register for courses. Only after they can register for courses and get access to content.
    • Thereafter, the candidate continues the programme as a regular student.
    • Candidates can pursue an IIT Madras BS Degree even as they join another college or degree.
