What is the purpose of the GATE Examination?

The GATE exam is conducted every year in an online mode to test the comprehensive understanding of undergraduate engineering and science courses. The entrance exam has multiple purposes. Check the given pointers to understand why the GATE exam is conducted online.

    1. M.E./M.Tech, and Ph.D Admission

GATE exam is mainly conducted for students to secure admission into postgraduate programmes like MTech and research progarmmes/PhD from top institutes such as IITs, NITs, IISc, IIITs, and other top universities. Most students take the exam for admission. However, students must secure a valid GATE score to be eligible for seat allocation. After completing the GATE exam, students will secure a seat in the college and later gain an engineering degree. With the engineering degree, students will have a higher chance of job placement opportunities in top companies, including PSUs like ONGC, NTPC, and IOCL, as well as private companies including Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.

    Aspect

    M.Tech / M.E. / M.S.

    Ph.D. (Direct & Regular)

    Programs covered

    M.Tech, M.E., M.S. (by research) in engineering/technology

Direct PhD after B.Tech; Regular PhD after M.Tech/M.E

COAP (IITs + IISc) and CCMT (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs); institute-specific PG portals for IITs.

    Institute-level Ph.D. admissions

    Eligibility (academic)

B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch./B.Sc. (Engg/Research) or equivalent in relevant discipline; final-year students can apply.

Direct PhD: B.Tech with high CGPA and valid GATE marks.

Regular PhD: M.Tech/M.E./M.S. with ~60% or 6.0 CGPA.

    Selection components

GATE score (major weightage) + academic record; some IITs add a written test/interview for certain departments.

Shortlisting via GATE + academics; final selection via written test and/or interview, research fit, and sometimes proposal/presentation.

    2. PSU and Government Recruitment;

Other than admission, the authority also conducts the GATE exam to select candidates for major job roles in ONGC, IOCL, GAIL, and NTPC. To secure a job in the PSU sector via GATE, candidates will have to meet the qualifying cutoff or a much higher score to qualify for the Group Discussion (GD) or Personal Interview (PI) round. Some of the major PSU and government recruitment jobs include Executive Trainee (ET) / Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET), Management Trainee (MT), Officer / Engineer (regular posts), and Scientist / Engineer.

    3. Financial Assistance and Fellowships

Clearing the GATE exam with a good score helps students to secure financial assistance and research fellowships funded by the Government of India. Wth the help of the scholarship, candidates can fulfil their dream of pursuing higher education in a top institution. The financial assistance mostly covers the tuition fees of the degree programme.

    Who Gives the GATE Exam?

The GATE examination primarily consists of engineering students and science graduates, who form the majority of participants. Below is a list of the top candidates eligible to take the GATE exam.
