Careers360: What is your score in JEE Main 2018? What is your all India rank and category rank?
Pawan Goyal: I scored350 marks. My JEE Main 2018 rank is 6. I belong to the general category so there is no category rank as such.
Careers360: Did you appear for the offline JEE Main exam or the online one? What is the reason behind this choice of yours?
Pawan Goyal: I appeared for the offline exam on April 8. I feel that online would have been slightly difficult for me as I am used to writing my answers. I also think that the question in the online exam come slightly tougher as compared to the offline one.
Careers360: Why do you want to study engineering? When did you decided to study engineering? Which branch would you be interested in? Any reason?
Pawan Goyal: My sister is my inspiration as she is an engineer. Watching her study engineering started me on my choice of engineering as a career. I would like to take up Computer Science as I like working on computers and I also think career wise, it is good as there are plenty of good jobs for Computer engineers.
Careers360: When did you start your JEE Main preparation? Tell us something about your preparation strategy and daily routine for JEE Main?
Pawan Goyal: I started seriously started studying for JEE Main from class 11. Apart from the coaching, I regularly studied for at least 5 to 6 hours each day. I would study whatever I felt like keeping in mind that I had to cover all three subjects – Physics, Maths and Chemistry. You see you have to maintain a balance between all three and do well in all.
Careers360: Was there a difference in the preparation strategy in the last months of JEE Main considering that the board exams also are during this period? How did you manage preparation for both?
Pawan Goyal: JEE Main syllabus encompasses the class 12 syllabus of NCERT. Some questions do come from there. Apart from this, two years of preparation – you are bound to have studied the questions that come for JEE Main. So it’s a matter of just answering the questions using all that you have learnt. You definitely cannot learn it all in that one month. What you learn in those two years matters. That last month is to refresh what you have learnt.
Careers360: Did you take coaching for JEE Main and if yes from where? What are the benefits of coaching according to you?
Pawan Goyal: I have taken coaching from Resonance. The faculty here is extremely co-operative, their study material is comprehensive for both JEE Main and Advanced. Faculty is pretty knowledgeable; they clear all your doubts and their teaching methods are student friendly.
Careers360: Mock tests and sample papers – how extensively did you practise with the help of these? Do you think practising from the previous year papers help and how?
Pawan Goyal: It is extremely important to practise. You see, you can know the true image of what the paper will be like only if you solve all the previous papers, the test papers by the coaching build the foundation and you hone it up by solving the past year JEE Main papers. You should solve past ten year papers of JEE Main both offline and online as a priority once you finish the syllabus. Again, what you can learn and do in two years is next to impossible in just one month. So ideally if you follow all that is taught and learn accordingly, you stand a very good chance of scoring well.
Careers360: Are there any special books that you feel have helped with your JEE Main preparation? Are the school text books adequate for preparing for JEE Main and Class XII?
Pawan Goyal: Actually the coaching material was enough and of course there were my school text books. There was no need for other books.
Careers360: Did you face any problem during the JEE Main examination? Which subject was the easiest and which was the toughest in JEE Main? What do you think is a tough thing to manage during the JEE Main exam?
Pawan Goyal: Every year, we hear of some issue or the other in JEE Main. This year, I feel that was not there. It was a good experience. I found Physics easy, Chemistry slightly tricky and yes, Maths was lengthy. Time was an issue but I managed somehow.
Careers360: What do you think are the key factors behind your stupendous success in JEE Main?
Pawan Goyal: Consistent study and strong parental support. The first was dependent upon me and the second is a blessing as you can do wonders if you have such parental support.
Careers360: How did you de-stress yourself during the preparation? What are your hobbies? How often could you pursue them?
Pawan Goyal: I love watching TV, so I used to watch TV at least for one hour every day. IPL was something I was interested in as I watched when I could but only after completing my study. What I mean to say is that it’s ok to give some time to such interests provided you don’t while your time away. You should balance it all and intersperse you study schedule with relaxing activities too.
Careers360: Who is your ideal or biggest inspiration in life and why?
Pawan Goyal: My mother and sister. My sister for inspiring me to study well; I look up to her and my mother for simply being there at all times. She stayed with me for the two years looking after everything so that I could study well. She was a strong support and a pillar of strength on days when I felt low.
Careers360: You know you are an inspiration to thousands of students across the country. Do you have any message for future aspirants on tackling the JEE Main exam?
Pawan Goyal: I would saybe consistent in your study and pursue your goals. Keep your interests in mind while choosing your goals in life. You can do better then.
