If you're a textile engineering undergraduate planning to sit for GATE 2027, you need to unlearn one thing first: there is no more standalone "TF" paper. IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, has folded Textile Engineering and Fibre Science into the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper as an optional section, XE9 in GATE 2027. This is the biggest change to hit textile aspirants in years, and it changes how you register, how you plan your two-paper combination, and how much weight your core textile knowledge actually carries on exam day.

In this article, we will tell you how the new Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (XE9) syllabus is structured, which books are still worth your time, and how to build a study plan that doesn't fall apart three months in.
For roughly a decade, textile aspirants registered under paper code TF and answered a dedicated 100-mark paper built entirely around fibre science, yarn and fabric manufacturing, testing, and chemical processing. That's gone.
From GATE 2027, IIT Madras has restructured several sectional papers XE (Engineering Sciences), XH (Humanities & Social Sciences), and XL (Life Sciences) and folded standalone branches like Textile Engineering and Fibre Science into them as optional sections. Textile now sits inside XE as section XE9, alongside other optional sections such as Materials Science, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Polymer Science, and Food Technology, among others.
The institute has also introduced a completely new Robotics & Automation (RA) paper this cycle and revised syllabus across the board, the first major overhaul in about five years- aimed at aligning GATE with current academic and industry needs.
What this means practically: you no longer register for "TF." You register for XE, and your core textile knowledge becomes one of two optional sections you choose during the GATE exam, not the entire paper.
The XE paper is organised into a compulsory mathematics section plus a menu of optional sections, of which you pick exactly two.

Fabric Manufacture, Structure & Properties - weaving preparatory processes, loom mechanisms, knitting technology, nonwovens, and fabric geometry
Textile Testing - sampling methods, moisture regain and conditioning, and testing procedures for fibres, yarns, and fabrics
Chemical Processing - pretreatment, dyeing mechanisms, printing methods, finishing treatments, and environmental/effluent considerations
A preparation strategy for the new XE format has to account for the fact that you're now juggling three distinct subject blocks instead of one continuous paper. Here's a practical way to think about it.
Since XE9 is the section you know best, use it to build early momentum and confidence, but don't let it consume all your time at the expense of Mathematics or your second optional section, both of which now carry equal or greater combined weight (50 marks versus XE9's 35).
At 15 marks, Section A is smaller than any single optional section, but it's also the most standardized and scorable part of the paper; the same core topics (linear algebra, calculus, probability, numerical methods) repeat across nearly every past year. High accuracy here is one of the most time-efficient ways to lift your overall score.
Previous years' GATE TF papers remain a valuable resource for practising XE9-style questions, since the underlying fibre, yarn, fabric, testing, and processing concepts have largely remained unchanged. Just be aware that question count and exact weightage will differ slightly now that XE9 is a 35-mark section rather than the dominant part of a 100-mark paper, so calibrate your expectations on volume, not concept coverage.
Because you'll be mentally switching between mathematics, textile theory, and a second unrelated subject within one 180-minute sitting, take full-length XE-format mock tests rather than isolated topic-wise quizzes. Subject-switching costs time if you haven't practised it.
Since MSQs and NATs carry no negative marking, calculation-heavy questions, yarn count conversions, twist calculations, fabric GSM, drafting and doubling ratios are lower-risk, higher-reward than borderline MCQ guesses. Build speed and accuracy here specifically.
At 15 marks, GA is identical across every GATE paper and consistently offers some of the easiest points on the exam. Treating it as an afterthought is a common and avoidable way to lose easy marks.
