GATE 2026 Exam Pattern for Civil Engineering: IIT Guwahati has released the GATE Civil Engineering exam pattern 2026 on the official website, gate2026.iitg.ac.in. Candidates can check the GATE 2026 exam pattern for Civil Engineering on this page. The exam pattern includes three types of questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions. The exam pattern includes the marking scheme, duration of the exam, types of questions, mode of exam, and more. Moreover, candidates must check the GATE 2026 CE syllabus along with the CE paper pattern. The authority will conduct the GATE CE entrance exam on February 14, 2026. The GATE 2026 exam will be held on February 7, 8, 14 and 15, 2026 in online mode.

The authority released the GATE 2026 exam pattern on the official website, gate2026.iitg.ac.in. The CE exam will consist of 65 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. It will be divided into two sections: General Aptitude (10 questions) and Civil Engineering Subject (55 questions). The weightage distribution for the GATE 2026 Civil Engineering paper will be 72% for subject-based questions, 13% for Engineering Mathematics, and 15% for General Aptitude.

65 questions will be asked in the GATE Civil Engineering exam 2026. Three types of questions are asked in the GATE exam. Check below for more details.
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): Each question has four options, of which the candidate has to choose only one correct option. Each question carries 1 or 2 marks, in all the papers and sections.
Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): Candidates have to choose one or more options as answers to these types of questions. Each question carries 1 or 2 marks, in all the papers and sections. There is no partial marking.
Numerical Answer Type (NAT): Each question carries 1 or 2 marks, all papers, and sections. The candidate has to enter their answer using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor.
Negative Marking: There will be negative markings for MCQ questions. For each wrong 1-mark question, 1/3 mark will be deducted and for each wrong 2-mark question, 2/3 mark will be deducted. However, there will be no negative markings in MSQ and NAT questions.
The authority designs the GATE exam pattern for Civil Engineering 2026 to test the following abilities of candidates.
Recall: Candidates are required to choose the correct answer using their memory or from a one-line computation. It tests the factual knowledge of the examinee. This part contains facts, principles, formulae, or laws in the discipline of the paper.
Comprehension: These questions are designed to test the understanding ability of the candidate in which he is required to conclude answers from fundamental ideas.
Application: The students are required to use their knowledge using computation or logical reasoning.
Analysis and Synthesis: They test the analytical skills of the candidate. They have to analyze the data which is present in the form of diagrams images, etc. Based on their analysis and synthesis of questions, candidates have to compare the information and choose the right answer.
