The JEE Main 2027 eligibility requirements are expected to apply uniformly across categories. A candidate’s General, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PwD/PwBD status does not by itself determine the number of attempts permitted. Rather, candidates need to meet the eligibility requirements with respect to their qualifying examination and other eligibility requirements as mentioned by NTA. All reserved category candidates shall be given reservations and other reservations applicable to admissions.
| Category | Attempt Eligibility | Applicable Provision |
|---|---|---|
General | As per NTA eligibility requirements | Open/unreserved admission seats |
GEN-EWS | As per the applicable eligibility requirements | EWS reservation, subject to conditions |
OBC-NCL | As per the applicable eligibility requirements | OBC-NCL reservation, subject to conditions |
SC | As per the applicable eligibility requirements | SC reservation and relevant admission provisions |
ST | As per the applicable eligibility requirements | ST reservation and relevant admission provisions |

It is essential for students planning to take a second drop before appearing for JEE Main 2027 to have a clear understanding of the attempt rules. Taking a drop does not provide students with an additional opportunity to appear for the JEE Main examination. The number of attempts a student is eligible for depends on the JEE Main eligibility criteria and the year in which they appeared for the Class 12 examination. Therefore, students who have completed Class 12 should consider their original qualifying year when determining whether they are eligible to appear for JEE Main 2027.
There is no age limit for the candidates appearing in the test. The candidates who passed in Class 12th or equivalent examination in 2025 or 2026 or appearing in examination in 2027 can apply for JEE Main 2027 irrespective of their age. However, candidates must meet the age requirements, if any, of the institute they wish to take admission to.
A good JEE Main score alone does not determine admission to an NIT or IIIT. Students must also meet the Class 12 eligibility requirements for admission through the NIT+ system. Under the current criteria, candidates generally need either 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 or an equivalent examination or a position within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective boards. For SC and ST aspirants, the applicable minimum aggregate is generally 65%.
So, if a student scores less than 75%, that does not automatically mean that they cannot be accepted, because the top 20 percentile option might still meet the criteria. These marks criteria are used to determine eligibility for admission and do not affect a candidate’s eligibility to appear for JEE Main. Students are advised to check the final requirements as mentioned in the official website of JoSAA/CSAB online as per the guidelines of JEE Main 2027 admissions.
JEE Main eligibility is based on the year of the qualifying examination and other criteria set by the NTA.
A drop year does not automatically restart eligibility.
Improvement examinations should not automatically be assumed to create a new qualifying year.
General and reserved-category candidates should follow the eligibility provisions applicable to their examination year.
Reservation benefits do not automatically provide additional JEE Main attempts.
There may be different Class 12 performance criteria for admission.
