Deepank: I was not able to believe my rank. I expected it somewhat between 60-70 and not among top 15.
Careers360: Tell us something about yourself. Which board have you studied under? Which school have you studied in?
Deepank: I'm a class XII student preparing to get admissions to the IITs. My father, Naresh Kumar Agrawal is a businessman and my mother is a housewife. I belong to Muzaffarpur, Bihar. I have done my class XII from Trident Public School at Harishankar Maniyari, Muzaffarpur. The school is affiliated to CBSE.
Careers360: What is your score in JEE Main 2017? What is your All India Rank?
Deepank: I scored 335 out of 360 marks in JEE Main. In Mathematics, I scored 115, in Physics it was 110 and Chemistry was 110. My All India Rank is 15.
Careers360: Did you appear for the offline JEE Main exam or the online one? What is the reason behind this choice of yours?
Deepank: I attempted the JEE Main 2017 exam in offline exam as I feel confident and comfortable with it.
Careers360: Why do you want to study engineering? When did you decide to study engineering? Which branch would you be interested in? Any reason?
Deepank: I was never interested to go into my dad's business, that's why I opted for engineering. I decided to study engineering in class XI.
I wish to go for Computer Science engineering as I think it’s the best.
Careers360: When did you start your JEE Main preparation? Tell us something about your preparation strategy and daily routine for JEE Main?
Deepank: I started my JEE Main preparation in class XI. I used to study 7 to 8 hours a day. I used to study during coaching and in the evening after returning back home also.
Careers360: Was there a difference in the preparation strategy in the last months of JEE Main considering that the board exams also are during this period? How did you manage preparation for both?
Deepank: No. For JEE Main, I prepared from notes given by my coaching institute and solved question papers covering the complete JEE Main syllabus. For board exams, I studied from NCERT books. It was a matter of solving some extra papers for JEE Main.
Careers360: Did you take coaching for JEE Main and if yes from where? What are the benefits of coaching according to you?
Deepank: Yes, I had my coaching from Resonance, Kota. I think coaching is important as they prepare you exclusively for the exam. It’s only because of my coaching that I got such a good rank.
Careers360: Mock tests and sample papers – how extensively did you practise with the help of these? Do you think practising from the previous year papers help and how?
Deepank: I thoroughly practised the last three years question papers of JEE Main. I practised both the offline and online question papers. I also practised 15-20 practise papers in the last week of exam.
Careers360: Are there any special books that you feel have helped with your JEE Main preparation? Are the school text books adequate for preparing for JEE Main and Class XII?
Deepank: I don't think so. For JEE Mains and boards, no special books are required. I feel that they are needed for JEE Advanced.
Careers360: Did you face any problem during the JEE Main examination? Which subject was the easiest and which was the toughest in JEE Main? What do you think is a tough thing to manage during the JEE Main exam?
Deepank: Not really. I didn't find any section difficult but Physics was the easiest for me in the exam. I think time management is the most important thing to keep in mind while you are giving the exam because even if you know the question but you fail to answer it due of lack of time, then you are eventually losing.
Careers360: What do you think are the key factors behind your stupendous success in JEE Main?
Deepank: My teachers from coaching and my parents who motivated me throughout the journey. Of course, without hard work and dedication, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve this.
Careers360: How did you de-stress yourself during the preparation? What are your hobbies? How often could you pursue them?
Deepank: I never felt any kind of stress while preparing for JEE Main. Till class X, I used to read novels but after coming to Kota for preparation I couldn't find time to read books, apart from syllabus books.
