Rules of Changing Branch in GFTIs- Aspirants seeking BTech admission to top engineering colleges in India must consider GFTIs as well. There are around 8900 BTech institutes; of these, 46 colleges are GFTIs that participate in JoSAA counselling. Nonetheless, competition to get into these GIFTs is quite high owing to the lower cutoff and better quality of education at lesser fees. However, students might not get a chance to pursue the desired BTech course or their subject of interest may change after admission. In such cases, all students are provided an opportunity to change the branch in Government Funded Technical Institutes after first year. GFTIs have rules for changing branch. Candidates must fulfill these eligibility criteria for branch change in GFTI. Read the complete article to know more about these norms.
It is expected that the NTA will announce the JEE Mains 2026 response sheet release date soon on its official website. Based on the last year's trends, the JEE Main response sheet will be published in the first week of February.
GFTIs have enabled the option of branch changes in certain participating institutes to allow candidates to be able to pursue a course & institute of their interest. The eligibility criteria for branch changing in GFTI differs according to each institute, hence candidates can find the specific criteria for specific institutes from the table below.

While certain criteria differ with each institute, there are some basic rules for branch changing across all the GFTI institutes. The following is a list of the common criteria for GFTI branch change.
Candidates should complete their 1st year of study without any backlogs. Hence, they can only apply for the branch change after completion of the 2nd semester
The candidates will be chosen for shifting of engineering branches based on their merit in semesters 1 & 2.
A minimum CGPA has to be obtained by the candidate. This is mentioned in the table above.
Branch change will only be permitted if the original strength of the course will not drop below 80%
The process to apply for an engineering branch change in GFTIs is fairly simple. The general application procedure is mentioned below.
Check eligibility criteria: Candidates should first check the eligibility criteria for their institute well in advance. This enables them to maintain the required CGPA through the 1 & 2nd semesters.
Application form: The application form for the B.Tech courses branch change will be available with the administrative office of the particular institute. Candidates should collect the form ASAP. Sometimes, the form will also be available online & should be downloaded.
Fill & submit: Candidates should carefully fill out the form & submit it along with the required documents before the last date.
Attend interview: In some cases, the candidates might be called for an interview to discuss why they want to change their branches & their academic performance.
However, candidates should note that each institute will have a specific procedure for the GFTI branch change. Detailed information will be available when the official notice is released for branch change applications.

A general equation of a circle is
$
x^2+y^2+2 g x+2 f y+c=0
$
Since it passes through $(0,0)$,
$
c=0
$
So the equation becomes
$
x^2+y^2+2 g x+2 f y=0
$
It cuts the x -axis at ( $a, 0$ ).
Substituting:
$
a^2+2 g a=0
$
g=-a/2
