Modern biotechnology is rapidly transforming healthcare, scientific research and various industries, making it increasingly important for undergraduate education to move beyond conventional laboratory teaching. Recognising this changing need, Ahmedabad University, in collaboration with Concord Biotech Limited, has established the Concord Biotech Biology Teaching Lab. The state-of-the-art facility was inaugurated on August 12, 2026, with the aim of bringing modern laboratory technologies and industry-relevant practices directly into undergraduate education.
The new teaching laboratory has been developed with modern infrastructure and advanced scientific equipment to provide students with stronger practical exposure in life sciences. The facility includes a multimodal fluorescent plate reader, UV/Visible spectrophotometer, automated cell counter and PCR machine. These instruments will allow students to gain hands-on experience with experimental techniques and technologies that are commonly used in contemporary research laboratories as well as the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

Vivek Tanavde, Associate Professor and Associate Dean, Sciences, School of Arts and Sciences, Ahmedabad University, said that the new laboratory will expand the facilities available for hands-on life sciences courses. He highlighted that the facility will improve the University's ability to train undergraduate students in state-of-the-art experimental techniques that are increasingly sought after by the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. He also expressed gratitude to Concord Biotech for supporting the initiative.

Traditionally, undergraduate laboratory education has focused mainly on fundamental experimental methods. While these techniques provide students with an important theoretical and practical foundation, they may not fully address the requirements of today's rapidly changing workforce. As new technologies continue to be adopted across the life sciences sector, students need opportunities to become familiar with modern platforms and techniques during their undergraduate education itself.

The Concord Biotech Biology Teaching Lab is designed to bridge this gap by introducing students to techniques such as protein purification, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Exposure to these commonly used technologies will help students develop practical skills that they are likely to use during higher studies, research projects and professional careers in the life sciences sector.
Sudhir Vaid, Chairman and Managing Director of Concord Biotech Limited, said that the future of India's life sciences sector will depend significantly on the quality of education and research talent developed today. He emphasised that education is central to scientific innovation, quality manufacturing and India's global competitiveness. According to him, establishing the advanced teaching laboratory at Ahmedabad University represents an investment in the country's future scientific talent.
Vaid further said that Concord Biotech hopes the facility will provide students with hands-on exposure to industry-relevant skills and encourage the next generation of scientists, researchers and biotechnology leaders. He added that the company remains committed to strengthening the connection between academia and industry, particularly because a well-trained talent pool is important for India's ambition of becoming a global centre for life sciences and biopharmaceuticals.
The new laboratory will support Ahmedabad University's five-year Integrated Master of Science programme in Life Sciences, which currently has around 180 students enrolled. The five-year structure provides students with sufficient time to develop and refine their laboratory skills through specialised laboratory courses.
The Life Sciences curriculum includes practical courses covering biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, cell and molecular biology, and immunology. Students receive training in several techniques, including protein purification and characterisation, mammalian cell culture, DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, immunoassays and the isolation of microbes from complex environments.

The Concord Biotech Biology Teaching Lab will significantly increase the University's existing laboratory capacity. Ahmedabad University currently has two teaching laboratories, along with additional facilities dedicated to microbial culture, plant tissue culture and mammalian cell culture. The new facility will allow more students to access advanced laboratory training and will also help meet the growing requirements of the Life Sciences programme.
The laboratory also reflects Ahmedabad University's wider educational approach, which focuses on connecting research with undergraduate learning. Through its interdisciplinary and liberal education model, the University encourages students to develop independent thinking, scientific curiosity and leadership skills while addressing complex societal challenges. By combining classroom education with contemporary laboratory practices, the Concord Biotech Biology Teaching Lab will help students build practical capabilities required for advanced education, scientific research and careers across the life sciences sector.
