MS score plays an important role in deriving the NIRF rank. Median Salary (MS) is one of the parameters of Graduation Outcomes under the NIRF Ranking parameters. MS, as part of GO, has 20% weightage in overall score. Maximum marks possible under MS parameter is 25. These marks are provided mainly based on the median salary recorded by the institute in the past three years. Yes , you can change your category in the April JEE Main session . The category you select during the January session does not lock you into it for the entire year . During the correction window for the April attempt , you will have the opportunity to update your category if you have your certificate by then .

Since you are in the General category for the January attempt , you will need to make sure that you change it to your correct category ( VJNT or OBC ) during the correction period .

This is completely valid as long as you provide the required category certificate during the April session .

Moreover If a candidate who doesn't fall under castes recognised as SC/ST/OBC by the Govt. of India & doesn't avail any form of reservations (except horizontal reservations like ExS, PwD, etc.) & his/her annual family income is above the prescribed limit of 8 lakhs by Government of India (or as prescribed by state govt in the respective states), then he/she will be recognised as a candidate from General category and not from EWS category.
