What is B.Tech Design Engineering at REVA University?

The B.Tech in Design Engineering brings together core engineering principles and creative methods of design. Unlike conventional programmes that primarily focus on engineering analysis or design programmes that may emphasise form and aesthetics, the programme combines the two streams.

The objective is to develop what the programme calls a “Design Spine”—the ability and confidence to apply design principles to engineered products. Students are trained to consider not only technical performance but also functionality, affordability, aesthetics and user requirements.

The curriculum follows activity-based, project-based, challenge-based and case-study-based learning, with an emphasis on “learning by doing.” Engineering subjects are taught from a design-centric perspective, allowing students to work across disciplines while developing solutions to real-world problems.

Curriculum: From Design Fundamentals to Product Development

The programme is structured around three major foundations—Design, Engineering and New Product Development.

The Foundation in Design covers areas such as creative design, form and aesthetics, ergonomics and human factors, sketching and CAD, product visualisation, engineering exploration, engineering design processes, prototyping, generative design and design communication.

The engineering component includes the design of mechanical systems, electromechanical systems, autonomous and intelligent systems, while the new product development component introduces students to requirements formulation, engineering design specifications, reverse engineering, simulation and digital twins, systems engineering, design quality, cost estimation and design documentation.

An important feature is the product development project. Students apply their learning to develop a product up to at least Technology Readiness Level 3 (TRL-3). Potential areas include defence products, robotics and automation, electric vehicles and sustainable mobility, agri-tech products, and biomedical and healthcare devices.

    How is the Programme Different?

A key distinction of the programme is its positioning between a conventional engineering degree and a traditional design degree. While many B.Des programmes concentrate on aspects such as appearance, aesthetics and form, REVA’s Design Engineering programme combines creative design with engineering rigour.

Students progressively move from concepts to functional designs and prototypes. The curriculum also incorporates ideation, grand challenges and hackathons to encourage students to develop new-to-the-world concepts. Industry immersion through field visits, internships and workshops forms another component of the learning model.

The programme also introduces students to advanced technologies, including AI, machine learning and digital technologies, which can be used for creativity, simulation and optimisation in product development.

    Industry Exposure and Product-Focused Learning

Rather than limiting the final outcome to a conventional academic project, the programme focuses on developing an actual product. Students gain exposure through field visits, internships, workshops and live projects connected to new product development.

The programme also has a strong design-led innovation and entrepreneurship component. Students can explore start-up ideas and venture creation through the university’s IDEA Lab and REVA NEST incubation ecosystem.

The infrastructure supports this hands-on approach. Facilities include an Idea Lab, AR/VR Studio, simulation and digital prototyping facilities, Makers Lab and workshops, Creative Studio, and Electronics & Embedded Systems Studio. The Idea Lab includes facilities for additive manufacturing, digital manufacturing, PCB fabrication and laser cutting, while the electronics studio supports circuit design, PCB development, IoT prototyping and sensor-based systems.

    Mentorship from Academia and Industry

The programme is supported by an advisory board comprising academics, practising designers and industry leaders. The brochure lists experts associated with institutions including IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IISc Bengaluru and IIITDM Kanchipuram, alongside professionals and former leaders from organisations and sectors including DRDO, Safran, Qualcomm, Schneider Electric and Honeywell.

    Eligibility for B.Tech Design Engineering

The programme is intended for students who demonstrate both engineering aptitude and an interest in creativity and design-led innovation.

According to the programme information, candidates should have completed 10+2/PUC or equivalent from a recognised board, with a minimum 60% aggregate in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. For engineering aptitude, candidates should qualify through JEE Main, KCET, COMED-K or an equivalent examination.

For the creativity and innovation component, candidates can qualify through UCEED, NATA or the Design Aptitude Test conducted by REVA University.

    Career Opportunities

The programme is designed to prepare graduates for roles across emerging technology and product-development sectors. Potential roles include Design Engineer, Systems Engineer, Product Development Engineer, Robotics and Mobility Designer, AI-Enabled Product Designer, R&D Specialist, Technology/Product Entrepreneur and Product Manager.

Graduates can explore opportunities in sectors including defence and aerospace, robotics and automation, automotive and electric mobility, semiconductor industries, agritech and sustainable systems, consumer products, biomedical and smart devices, and advanced manufacturing and R&D.

For students interested in building products rather than simply studying engineering systems, REVA’s B.Tech in Design Engineering offers a multidisciplinary pathway that connects engineering knowledge, creative thinking, prototyping, emerging technologies and entrepreneurship. The programme’s focus on hands-on learning and product development aims to prepare graduates to transform ideas into functional engineering solutions.
