Among top 100 Universities Globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026
With the JEE results out, students have their results. With the results in hand, the next step is not just getting a seat in an IIIT, NIT or IITs; it's about using the rank in order to get the right branch at the right college. The aim of the student should be to find a branch and college mix that offers strong academic output and has good career outcomes.
As per last year's trends, the expected JEE Main cutoff for the EWS category is 81.4 percentile.

The Mathematics and Computing branch is gradually emerging as one of the most important engineering branches. In the era of artificial intelligence, data science and other advanced technologies, mathematics is not only the core foundation, but it also shapes everything that students build and work on. Students need to have a close look at this branch, as it offers long-term career opportunities that are expected to grow even further in the coming years.
The article gives information about the closing ranks based on JEE Main 2025, seat availability and the rank range that might be required for Mathematics and Computing admission at IIITs. The article aims to help the students make well-informed decisions.
India currently has 26 IIITs offering 9,940 B.Tech seats, distributed across categories as follows:
Total IIIT | 26 |
Total Seats in IIITs | 9,940 |
Open | 3,959 |
EWS | 920 |
OBC-NCL | 2,513 |
SC | 1,404 |
ST | 713 |
However, only a small number of IIITs currently offer Mathematics and Computing. This limited availability, combined with rising demand, makes this branch highly competitive.
Mathematics and computing are the backbone of the modern technology ecosystem. Sectors such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, financial modelling, and algorithm design are primarily built on mathematical principles.
B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing helps develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills. The programme provides graduates with the flexibility to pursue careers in software development, artificial intelligence, quantitative finance, and research-driven roles.
There is an overall adoption of AI and Data-driven technologies at a global scale. Those students who have a strong grasp of mathematics and computing concepts have a clear long-term advantage over others. At present, there are only a limited number of IIITs that offer this branch. Due to the limited availability of seats, but a growing awareness and demand for the programme, securing a seat in a mathematics and computing programme has become highly competitive.
The table below shows the highest closing ranks for Mathematics and Computing in IIITs, based on All India JEE Main data. Another point to note is that only four offer the B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing course. The cutoff is based on the JEE Main 2025 so that students know the chances of getting into this branch.
| Institute | OPEN | EWS | OBC-NCL | SC | ST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
33940 | 5188 | 13796 | 9185 | 5246 | |
41831 | 6837 | 16807 | 9609 | 5391 | |
43476 | 6761 | 16955 | 10240 | 4836 | |
45422 | 6661 | 17295 | 10586 | 5397 |
These closing ranks represent the last admitted students in each category.
What these closing ranks indicate is that pursuing mathematics and computing at IIITs is also possible for students with good performance. It is not limited only to the top makers. However, what one needs to keep in mind is that as an increasing number of students realise the long-term importance of this branch, closing ranks are likely to shift upwards, resulting in increased competition for admission.
Based on the highest closing rank trends, competitiveness varies across institutes:
Highest competition: IIIT Bhopal
Moderate competition: IIIT Ranchi
Relatively broader access: IIIT Raichur and IIIT Bhagalpur

Students with ranks between 30,000 and 45,000 have a realistic chance of getting admission in IIITs for B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing. Of course, this also depends on the category and counselling round variations.
Presently, B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing is offered by only a small number of IIITs. In the future, more institutes are expected to offer this branch. The important point that students need to remember is that an increased number of students does not mean that the competition will reduce. The demand for the course is growing rapidly as more and more students are understanding the critical role of mathematics in artificial intelligence and modern computing careers.
There are several institutes where this branch is in demand at levels that are at par with computer science, because of its strong career outcomes. Those students who pursue this branch from IIITs should treat this a great academic pathway that will lead to a positive career outcome in the long term.
Selecting a branch is not just a matter of popularity; it is a decision that has an effect on long-term career outcomes. B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing is accepted as one the most future-relevant engineering branches. It offers an analytical foundation that is required for artificial intelligence, advanced software development, and the key to emerging technology domains.
If a student has a rank that gives him or her a foothold in a good IIIT, the student needs to give it serious consideration. Mathematics and Computing offer long-term career opportunities in comparison to other conventional branches.
