JEE Mains is one of the examinations in India where competition is really tough. So, getting good marks in JEE requires not just hard effort, but also careful exam preparation. The exam is conducted online in two sessions using a computer-based exam.
The candidates are allowed to choose all the subjects or, identify a high scoring subject and try to get the maximum marks in JEE exam. As the syllabus of JEE Main 2024 is vast, giving the equal time for preparation of all three subjects is quite difficult for many students. Careers360 brings a key takeaway from analysis of JEE Main, and in this analysis we found that Chemistry is the most scoring subject with the average score being more than 35 marks; Mathematics, on the other hand, is the most difficult to score off averaging a little over 25. For the analysis, we surveyed many candidates who appeared in JEE Main 2024 Paper I to check and understand the scoring patterns for subjects.
As per our analysis, Chemistry is one of the maximum-scoring subjects, followed by Physics and Maths. For example, if a candidate is not aware of this fact and spends less time preparing for chemistry. The candidates give more time to preparing for Mathematics and Physics, as they are his/her favorite subjects. Now, it is easy to understand that the candidates are missing the golden opportunity to score some easy marks, which in turn will bring down his/her chances of getting a good seat through JEE Mains.
In contrast, if the candidate knows which subject scores high marks in JEE Main, this could help in planning a better exam strategy which in turn could pay off with a good B.Tech seat in one of the NITs.
To find out which subject in JEE Main Paper I will fetch more scores, we have surveyed a large number of JEE Mains candidates who had appeared in JEE Main 2024. We first calculated the subject-wise total aggregate marks. Next, we calculated the average score of candidates in each subject – Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The average score is the most crucial data point as it allows us to identify the subject that is more scoring. To know more, consult the table below.
Subject | Total Aggregate Marks of candidates in the sample | Average Score | Average Total Score in three subjects |
Chemistry | 229932 | 35.26 | 90.11 |
Physics | 192487 | 29.51 | |
Mathematics | 165299 | 25.348 |
Among the three subjects, Chemistry is the easiest subject to score high marks. Mathematics was the most difficult, while Physics was sandwiched between the two.
Being the easiest subject, no candidate should neglect Chemistry as it will otherwise severely limit the chances of scoring a good rank in JEE Main exam.
As Chemistry is considered one of the easiest or most scoring subjects, students cannot ignore the importance of this subject. The other two subjects also have a meaningful contribution to the total score for the candidate to get a good rank.
When making a study schedule for the JEE, the candidate needs to consider the scoring potential for each paper. For example, a candidate who is good in Mathematics should also try to accommodate Chemistry and Physics as well. This way the scoring opportunities of the candidate will go up. Conversely, a candidate who is at home with Chemistry may need to put in a little bit more effort to get a score even higher.
We also did an analysis of JEE Main paper II to find out the most scoring subject and which is the least. The results were along the expected lines. Like in Paper I, Mathematics turned out to be the most difficult subject. On average candidates were scoring only 18.3 marks in this paper. The drawing test came in second at 31.12. The Aptitude paper turned out to be the real savior for most candidates with the average scores going over 130. So, if you are appearing for JEE Main paper II you now know which paper to target to score heavily. Please refer to the table below to check the full details.
Subject | Total Aggregate Marks of candidates in sample | Average Score Per Candidate | Average Total Score in three subjects |
Mathematics | 41221 | 18.304 | 179.784 |
Aptitude Test | 293589 | 130.36 | |
Drawing Test | 70104 | 31.12 |
Mathematics was the toughest subject to score in paper II. Aptitude was the easiest, followed by the Drawing test
The average marks scored by candidates in Mathematics are 18.304. The low-scoring pattern of the paper can demotivate the candidate, but interestingly to get a good rank in paper II it is sort of mandatory for candidates to do well in this subject. The reason is to get an edge over the others considering that all candidates tend to fare well in the Aptitude test – the average score of 130 out of 200 is proof of that.

3. Topic-wise focus: Prioritize high-weightage chapters and weak areas first.
4. Daily problem practice: Solve previous year questions and chapter-wise exercises.
