In JEE Main 2026, the state code is used to determine a candidate’s eligibility for state quota seats in NITs, IIITs, and other government-funded technical institutes. The state code is based on the location where the candidate has passed Class 12 or equivalent, not on the place of birth or residence. If Class 12 is passed from one state, that state code applies, irrespective of where the candidate appeared for JEE Main. For candidates who completed Class 12 from an institution abroad, the state code of eligibility is determined based on the permanent address mentioned in the application form.
