Is coaching really compulsory for cracking JEE Main? Honestly, no. But if you are preparing for JEE Main 2027, you’ve probably heard it again and again from classmates, seniors, and even family that you should join a coaching institute if you want to crack the JEE Main exam. You can prepare for JEE Main 2027 without coaching and still get good marks. Self-study does not mean that you have to study completely on your own, with zero structure or plan. It’s more about having a strategy, a good routine, and the right way to practise. You need good study material, reliable lectures when a concept is difficult, regular practice, JEE Main previous- 10 year questions, JEE Main mock tests, and a way to track your mistakes.

Yes, JEE Main is possible without coaching.
For JEE Main preparation without coaching, students can use:
Good study resources
Online lectures for difficult topics
Regular JEE Main mock tests
An error notebook to track mistakes
The important part is to use these resources in the right order. Do not think that if you are watching lectures, you are preparing. You have actually prepared a chapter only when you can solve questions from it without depending on the solution.

The biggest mistake self-study students make is collecting resources instead of using them. You do not need multiple resources for every subject. You just need one or two good resources and practise them again and again.
A practical combination is:
NCERT for basic reference
One reliable lecture source
H.C. Verma or another standard practice source
JEE Main PYQs
Mock tests
Preparation Resources:
Chemistry requires particularly regular NCERT revision.
Use this combination.
NCERT
One reliable lecture/source for concepts
PYQs
Regular revision
Preparation Resources:
For maths, question practice is the only way to perform better. A simple combination is:
NCERT/basic material for fundamentals
One reliable JEE-level practice source
Chapter-wise PYQs
Mixed-topic practice
Preparation Resources:
Use free online lectures, it helps to understand hard topics a little better, and also makes your basics stronger. Try to pick lectures those lecture which are specifically for JEE Main.
Note: Students can use SATHEE, an initiative of the Ministry of Education, in association with IIT Kanpur, to get access to free JEE preparation resources. It provides video lectures as well as doubt-clearing help, so you can keep improving your preparation in a more steady way.
Try to refer to standard books to build your concept strong. Keep your focus on learning the concepts first, and then on doing the practice questions regularly, even if it feels repetitive at times. You do not need five books for every subject. You just need one or two good books and practise them again and again.

Revisit the key concepts, formulas, and notes every so often, because doing that in a regular way helps you retain topics for longer.
Try to do mock tests and sample papers in an exam-like environment, so you get used to the pressure. Go through PYQs too, so you can catch question trends and not lose time. This should also help you boost both speed and accuracy, little by little.
Build a strong base first, like really understanding the basic idea, those key formulas and the overall way of solving, before you go ahead to JEE Main level questions.
Revise formulas and practise the physics problems.
Understand the concept and regularly revise the reactions and inorganic exceptions.
Understand the method and solve the problems.

A student who studies for six focused hours can sometimes focus more than someone who sits with books for twelve distracted hours. Your required study time will also depend on whether you are in Class 11, Class 12, or taking a drop year.
If You Are in Class 11: Focus on building a strong foundation.
Regular school/classes | Focused JEE study after school |
Daily question practice | Weekly revision and Regular tests |
If You Are in Class 12: You have two priorities:
Keep up with your Class 12 syllabus.
Continue revising Class 11 topics.
Note: Do not leave the complete Class 11 syllabus for the final months.
If you are a dropper student, you have more available study time, but that does not mean you should study every hour.
Use your additional time for:
Concept repair | PYQs |
Timed practice | Mock tests |
Detailed test analysis | Revision of weak chapters. |
Note: This timetable can be changed according to your time availability.

While preparing for JEE Main without coaching, students have no one to check on them, so they start losing momentum, get exhausted, and make the type of mistakes that affect their preparation. Some of the common mistakes are given below:
Common Mistakes in JEE Main Preparation without Coaching | What You Should Do Instead |
1. Changing Teachers Every Week | Different teachers may explain the same topic in different ways. This can confuse you. Choose one reliable teacher or online course and stick with it. Use another teacher only if you do not understand a topic. |
2. Collecting Too Many Books | Buying lots of books does not mean better JEE Main preparation. Choose NCERT and one good practice book for each subject and finish them properly before adding more. |
3. Watching Lectures Without Solving Questions | Watching a 3-hour lecture is not enough. Solve questions while studying and practise JEE Main-level problems after each topic. |
4. Ignoring Revision | You will forget things after studying them. That is normal. Keep a regular JEE Main revision schedule and revise formulas, concepts, and important questions every week. |
5. Taking Mock Tests Without Analysing Them | A mock test only gives you a score if you do not check your mistakes. After every JEE Main mock test, find out which questions you got wrong and add them to your error log. |
6. Studying Only Your Favourite Subject | It is easy to spend more time on the subject you like. But JEE Main has Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, so give enough time to all three. Spend extra time improving your weakest subject. |
