Is the 4 Year Engineering Degree Losing Its Value in the AI Era? - For many years, a four-year engineering degree has been considered a strong path to a good career. However, the growth of AI is changing the way companies work and hire people. Today, AI can be used to write code, analyze data, design systems and perform various technical tasks. For this reason, some students are asking whether they will secure a good position if they just have a degree. Employers are seeking skills, problem-solving ability, creativity and experience with AI tools. It's not as though engineering degrees are becoming obsolete. Instead, students may need to get new skills in addition to their degree to stay competitive.

An engineering degree remains valuable in the era of AI. While degrees are important, employers now expect applicants to have real world work experience in conjunction to their knowledge and competency with new technologies such as AI. To stay employable amidst rapidly changing technologies in the workplace, engineering students not only need to have problem solving skills but must also have the ability to identify, estimate, and design solutions to problems using the knowledge of algorithms.

Artificial intelligence encompasses many technologies such as those that learn and think critically, draw conclusions, and predict outcomes. Though still relatively young, it takes many forms from healthcare to manufacturing, finance, transport, and beyond. With maturity, AI's power will only grow as will the possibilities it brings. Engineers are increasingly central to this shift, shaping system architecture, building out automation, and improving both user experience and business operations. That shift has given rise to a fast-growing discipline in its own right — AI engineering — one that looks likely to carry significant weight going forward. None of this points toward AI replacing core engineering skills; instead, it's positioned to work alongside them, making engineers sharper and more effective at what they already do.

There are repeatable, predictable engineering tasks which can be automated with AI, but there is still a great deal of engineering knowledge that is important. The knowledge gained from studying maths, sciences, programming and problem solving at university can be applied to the understanding and effective use of AI by engineers. Meanwhile, new jobs such as AI specialists, Robotics engineers, Cybersecurity analysts, Cloud engineers, Data engineers and Embedded system developers are cropping up.

Thus, engineering education has shifted from its role of equipping students for traditional engineering tasks to imparting knowledge and problem-solving skills to operate with the advanced technologies. The skills developed in a strong engineering education provide a solid basis for the graduates to adapt as AI continues to transform the work environment.
Engineering degrees were historically regarded as evidence of a person's technical knowledge and discipline and their ability to complete the course. However, in this day and age, employers are seeking skills. Employers prefer to see candidates' practical application of knowledge in solving real-world problems. A student who has had experience in projects and internships in computer science and experience in open-source development will be more beneficial than one who has only theoretical knowledge. AI is changing how technical work is done. Therefore, pupils need to be taught to use modern tools appropriately. It's still important to have an engineering degree, but knowledge and skills are becoming increasingly important for a successful career.
