How to calculate JEE Main 2025 rank based on Percentile score? - Aspirants wondering how to calculate the JEE Main 2025 rank based on the percentile score will find important information in this article. Candidates will be able to predict their rank based on the JEE 2025 result. As we know, NTA has released the JEE Main score in the form of percentile. The JEE Main rank is based on the percentile score of NTA JEE Mains. The reason why students ask about JEE Main 2025 rank based on the NTA percentile score is know their chances of admission. Whether to appear JEE Main April session or not. Check out how to calculate the JEE Main 2025 rank using the percentile score below in this article.

NTA will conduct the JEE Main normalisation process session-wise so the percentile score you got would be relative to the others in your session. This score denotes the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below (same or lower raw scores) that particular Percentile in that examination. So the 9 toppers are students who have got 100 NTA Scores and have got the highest scores which is 100 percentile after normalisation in their respective sessions. The marks obtained in between the highest and lowest scores will also been converted to appropriate Percentiles.

Note: It may be noted that the formula given for the calculation of percentile in JEE Main is indicative and should not be taken as accurate as the actual ranks will vary on account of many factors. For the actual rank, candiadtes should check the alloted rank on the JEE Main 2025 scorecard.

How to calculate JEE Main 2025 rank from Percentile score?

JEE Main 2025 exam dates will be announced on the official website. Candiadtes can follow the previous year statistics to get an idea of how to calculate the JEE Main rank from the percentile. Below is the process of calculating rank from percentile with last year's example.

As per the previous year NTAJEE Main statistics, 823967 students appeared for JEE Main in the January session. NTA announced that 20 students have scored 100 percentile in the previous year sessions and has declared them as JEE Main Toppers.

To calculate the JEE Main rank, you first need to know the percentage of candidates with higher percentile scores than you. To calculate that, the formula would be 100 (highest score) - your percentile score.

Since the percentile is calculated from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees, the formula applies the total number of students in the January session which is 8,22,000 /100 * percentage of people ahead of you to arrive at the rank.

Therefore, the formula to calculate the JEE Main rank through percentile for January is

JEE Main rank (probable) = (100- NTA percentile score ) X 823967 /100

If the NTA percentile score is 90.70, JEE Main rank will be (100-90.70 ) X 823967/100 = 76628

Consider the NTA score of 80.60 then JEE Main 2023 rank = (100-80.60) X 823967 /100. The rank will be 159849

** This formula would not be for a 100 percentile score as those are the top ranks.

Candidates can also use the JEE Main Rank Predictor to check their rank.

How to decide whether to go for JEE Main 2025 April?

Candidates can take a probable calculation of percentile in JEE Main January 2025 session and check the rank. Based on your performance in the JEE Main January session, you can decide if you want to attempt the April session or not.

According to the previous year statistics, the total number of candidates that appeared for the JEE Main April session are 10,67,959. Using this as a basis, use the NTA score and see what is the JEE Main rank.

Why the January NTA score? The reason is that the authority will consider the better of the two session's scores. So if you perform badly in April, the January NTA score will be counted and if you perform better, then the rank will only be better.

So what will be the April JEE Main rank from the NTA Percentile Score of January?

Using the same formula,

If the NTA percentile score is 90.70, JEE Main rank will be (100-90.70) X 10,67,959/100 = 99320

In this case, you have a good chance of qualifying for JEE Advanced (as 2,50,000 students qualify for it) and can check the JEE Main cutoff from previous years to understand which institute you can apply for admissions.

Consider the NTA score of 80.60 then JEE Main rank = (100-80.60) X 10,67,959 /100. The rank will be 207184 which means may not have a chance of qualifying for JEE Advanced.

What is the minimum NTA percentile that may stand a chance to qualify for JEE Advanced?

The NTA percentile score of 89.7548849 will stand a chance at JEE Advanced if one takes a look at the JEE Main cutoff from last year.

It is a fact that IITs are dream institutions for most engineering aspirants. So a student who has done exceptionally well in January session of JEE Main may wish to skip the JEE Main April session to concentrate on JEE Advanced preparation. Another student may have scored well enough and feels that another session is too strenuous so may wish to skip it if only he/she has a fair chance of a seat in one good NIT or IIIT. Others may wish to know if they have the chance for any admissions based on their January JEE Main percentile scores or if should they appear for the April exam to better this.

We hope that the decision to write or skip can be made a bit easier using the calculation methods mentioned in this article.

Thank you !

With your JEE Main CRL 476199 and OBC rank 173160, admission to Civil Engineering at Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), Sarang under JoSAA counseling is highly unlikely, since even civil branch closing ranks in IGIT usually remain within 50k–80k CRL (general) and much lower for OBC. However, you may try through state counseling (Odisha JEE) where cutoffs are sometimes more flexible, but chances are still very low. You should keep other private/state colleges as backup.

Hey! With a JEE Main rank of around 1 lakh, you still have a good chance to get admission in several engineering colleges that provide quality education at a reasonable fee. For government colleges, you can aim for NITs or GFTIs in branches like Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering, as these usually have slightly higher closing ranks. For example, colleges like NIT Goa, NIT Puducherry, and NIT Srinagar might have seats available in certain branches.

Apart from NITs, state government engineering colleges are also a good option, especially under home state quota. They often have lower tuition fees and good faculty, so you can get a solid education without spending much.

If you are open to private colleges, there are options like VIT Vellore, KIIT Bhubaneswar, or Amity University that provide decent infrastructure and placements. However, the fees may be higher than government colleges.

My advice is to focus on branches that are less competitive, check all counseling rounds, and make use of state quotas if applicable. With proper planning, a rank of 1 lakh can still help you get a good college and start your engineering career success

fully.

No, you can’t use a previous year’s JEE rank for the current year’s WBJEE counselling. Only the JEE Main rank of the same admission year is valid along with that year’s WBJEE rank.
