As the JEE Advanced 2025 exam has not been conducted yet, candidates can check the queries posed by the candidates in the previous years JEE Advanced exam.
Q1. I know the Discipline I want to study. How to choose the IIT?
Ans. The first thing is to check the IIT's reputation for the course. Every institute is well-known in at least one subject. Check the website of the desired IIT to learn about the amenities provided, the infrastructure available, and the faculty credentials. The second critical component is to check the student's comments on the subject. This can be seen on social media, as many alumni are vocal about their alma mater, as well as current students who are highly active with their groups on Facebook. Another key factor is the placement history. After all, the final result is typically a pretty good job following graduation.
Q2. I know which IIT I want to study in. What discipline should I choose?
Ans. This answer is totally dependent on you as a student and your areas of interest. You must have chosen an IIT for a specific reason. Elaborate on that, to know what discipline you want to pursue. You must note that you must enjoy the discipline you have selected or been assigned because your entire career is dependent on it.Also go through the syllabus for each of the courses to determine if that is something you want to pursue career in. Needless to say, the JEE Advanced Cutoffs will also play an important role in choosing the discipline. Determine the eligibility for the interested course in the particular IIT, then finalise the course.
Q3. Which IITs have the best placements? Shouldn’t I see this factor while choosing the institute?
Ans. It is well known that IIT placements are excellent. However, to get a broader perspective, you may look at our previous year IIT placements coverage , which is based on official data furnished by the institutes themselves.
Check out the 880 top recruits from IIT Madras. IIT BHU was also among those with a strong placement record. Read on to find out which companies came in and how many students got placement.
It can be safely said that all the older IITs definitely have very good placement records and Rank holders 100 to 1000 will be able to benefit from the admissions to these. The newer ones are slowly making their mark and have been known to have a good placement records too.
Q4. My preference is CSE. Which IITs will I get admission to? What should my preference be?
Ans. As you know, that IIT B and IIT D are out of the question as the cutoffs for these are below AIR 100. For AIR 100 to 1000, the following institutes are the preferences for Computer Science Engineering as per the cutoffs given by the IITs for the past year. Keep in mind that the cutoffs are only indicative and do not ensure that they will be the same this year

Now factors to consider while choosing the institute are the reputation of the IIT, the infrastructure, faculty qualifications and placements.
Q5. Should I opt for Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering? I am pretty confused. And Which IITs should I apply to?
Ans. Mechanical and electrical engineering are the most popular fields after CSE. Many students choose them because these core engineering fields provide good career opportunities. These fields are likewise represented by established departments at the older IITs. You should consider your interests before making your selection. Before selecting your branch, talk to your seniors and research the course and what it requires. Also make sure to check the placements and career growth opportunities in the chosen branch. Make sure you understand before applying.
An added advantage for EE or ME is the demand in PSUs. Since the past few years the numbers have only increased and there is now increased awareness about the core engineering branches.
Q6. I want to pursue a good branch in IIT Delhi, Mumbai, Kanpur. What are the best options for me?
Ans. Admission to IITB and IITD for disciplines other than CSE may be available with a rank between 100 and 1000, whereas admission to CSE at IITK is possible for a rank below 100 based on past cutoffs. The older IITs are preferred since they are seen to have the best professors, facilities, and so on. So the option is determined by the student's interests, ambition, and other considerations such as geography, etc.
It can be safely said that all three institutes are good. The branches that are most preferred here by students with AIR 100 to 1000 are mentioned in the table below
Mechanical Engineering |
Electrical Engineering |
Aerospace Engineering |
Civil Engineering |
Mathematics & Computing |
Engineering Physics |
Chemical Engineering |
Production, and Industrial Engineering |
Q7. What about the Dual Degree Programs? Are they good? Since I want to do an M.Tech after my B.Tech, should I take this up right now?
Ans. Dual Degree Programs are designed for students who are confident to continue their education after completing their graduation. So, yes, Dual degree is a good option if you're sure about pursuing PG. They are good, but at this point, you should also consider if you will be willing to spend more than four years in that profession. The other point is that specialisation needs to be addressed. If you have the option of choosing your specialisation at a later stage and the dual degree is in a field you are interested in, then it should be a good option for you.
A few examples:
Q8. If my interest is pure science- Should I leave the premier IITs and go to IISc Bangalore?
Ans. Yes, we would advise that. IISc Bangalore is a renowned institution and it is tough to get a seat there. Then there are the IISERs – six of them that also offer the opportunity to develop oneself in pure science. Candidates can apply on the basis of their JEE performance, KVPY performance, or appear for an aptitude test.
Q9. If I am interested in Space Technology, should I study in an IIT or should I opt for IIST which specialises in this and I am told charges no fees?
Ans. The answer would be to choose IIST Technology. The Indian Institute of Space Science & Technology is the country's first of its kind, providing high-quality education in fields such as space sciences, space technology, and space applications. The institute offers B.Tech degrees in three areas: Aerospace Engineering, Avionics, and Physical Sciences. Dual Degree (B. Tech + M.S / M. Tech) has replaced the B. Tech (Physical Sciences) leading to a B.Tech degree in Engineering Physics and any of the following Postgraduate specialisations – MS in Astronomy & Astrophysics or Earth System Science or Solid State Physics and M.Tech in Optical Engineering.
The major feature of the UG programmes is the complete absence of any fees payable to the institute. So education in essence is completely free subject to a stipulated minimum academic requirement from the students. Since performance-based financial assistance is provided by DOS to the B.Tech students of IIST, ISRO/DOS will have the first right to absorb them, subject to the human resource requirements of ISRO/DOS.
Q10. Supposing I get a seat in my preferred IIT, say IIT Bombay but not my choice of branch- should I take the admission? Will there be an allowance for branch change afterwards?
Ans. If you are ready to do your B.Tech from IIT Bombay, there is no use in second thoughts to yourself. You should accept the offer. The only concern will be whether you will be able to maintain your enthusiasm and love for the branch you choose. On the other hand, our advice would be to look into other IITs where you might be able to get into a field of your choosing and apply there.
Most IITs accept branch transfers in general, however, the guidelines for doing so may vary depending on the institute's policies. You will also need to have a good CGPA if you want to change your branch. It is best to check the rules of branch change for the specific IIT. For the benefit of the students, the JEE Advanced officials have stated the Branch change policies for each participating institute.
Q11. Why is Computer Science more in demand than IT? If I get a seat in IT and not in CSE, should I take it up?
Ans. Except for the electives, there isn't much of a difference if you look closely at the syllabus. It is simply a myth that CSE is a better alternative. Having said that, several universities and companies distinguish between IT and CSE. For example, BITS exclusively accepts IT applicants, for M.E. Software Systems (they are not eligible for M.E. Computer science). BAARC also does not accept applications from IT students for their OCES/DGFS programmes. IT is good and covers a lot of the same material as CSE students, thus the answer is yes.
Q12. Should I go to an established IIT for a course that is not of my choice or a relatively new one for a course of my choice?
Ans. Generally established ones are preferred, as, comparatively new ones, such as IIT Gandhinagar or IIT Hyderabad, might be considered. These are becoming increasingly popular because of their approach to their students and their concept of growth. There are several aspects to consider, and it is best to conduct your research before enrolling.
The most recent IITs cannot be suggested because there is no information about them other than the location where they are being established. Having said that, the other new IITs that have opened in recent years have many issues, such as infrastructure, good professors, and adequate facilities. Even if they are supervised by senior IITs, their performance is not yet widely recognized enough to suggest them implicitly.
The bottom line depends on your enthusiasm for the subject and your willingness to go the extra mile. If you have enthusiasm for the topic, you will strive to excel regardless of where you are, and at that time the place will be secondary.
Q13. Being a female candidate, should my choice of IIT depend upon the accessibility of the campus and hostel facilities? How will I know whether it is safe and good for female candidates?
Ans. The safety of many female students and their parents is a critical concern. So, given the current safety worries, the choice of IIT is important in this scenario. However, it is preferable to visit the IIT and speak with the administrative staff there. Female candidates can also check the hostels and review their security measures. Raise all of your concerns and get them answered before enrolling.
Q14. If I take up Mining engineering, as a female candidate – what will be my chances for placement and career? With the Joint Counselling, which institutes allow female candidates for mining courses and which don’t?
Ans. According to Section 46 (1) of the Mines Act of 1952, "No woman shall, notwithstanding anything contained in any other law, be employed
(a) in any part of a mine that is below ground,
(b) in any mine above ground except between 6:00 and 19:00 hrs.”
Therefore, ISM Dhanbad, NIT Jalandhar, and NIT Raipur do not accept female students for their mining engineering programmes, although IIT Kharagpur, IIT (BHU), NIT Nagpur, and NIT Rourkela do accept female candidates for their mining courses.
Given the legal implications, it is safe to assume that female candidates will not be given first priority for placements. Career-wise also it is restrictive in view of the legal restrictions.
Q15. I am told IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Delhi are well known for their computer science programmes. So should I join an IIT or opt for these institutes? Why?
Ans. There are many popular computer science programs at IIIT Hyderabad and Delhi. Admissions for IIIT Delhi are through JAC Delhi, whereas candidates must apply independently to IIIT Hyderabad.
IIIT-H emphasises coding abilities via an intense computer science program. Every year, IIIT-H apparently sends the most GSoC competitors, which says volumes of the environment there. IIIT Allahabad is another good option, and IIIT Delhi is gradually establishing itself as a research-oriented institution. The practical approach to the course of study, paired with outstanding infrastructure, is the deciding factor for the IIITs. So, if you acquire a spot in one of these IIITs, you should check into it.

Hello Alka
For JEE Advance, the best 5 subjects through which you need to calculate your percentage is:
1. Physics
2. Chemistry
3. Mathematics
4. One language (which is English)
5. One other subject of your choice
So you will need to choose PCM + English + a 5th subject to calculate your percentage.
Hope this answer helps! Thank You!!!
Hello!
In JEE Advanced eligibility, the top 5 subjects from your board exam are considered. Usually, they are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and any two other subjects from the main curriculum. If CMS is your optional subject and IT is an additional subject, the board will still calculate based on the 5 highest marks from your eligible subjects. Additional subjects are considered only if they replace a lower score from another subject. For example, if IT has a higher score than English or CMS, then IT can be counted. However, some boards follow strict rules where only main subjects are counted, so you must verify with your board’s official notification. The 75% criteria means your average percentage in those best 5 subjects must meet the requirement. My advice—list all your subjects, arrange them from highest to lowest marks, and take the top five as per rules.
Hope this clears your doubt!
Getting under AIR 100 in JEE Advanced in 6 months is very tough but possible if you already have strong basics and are scoring high in JEE Main-level tests. You'll need 10–12 hours of focused daily study, advanced problem-solving, and regular mock tests. If you're starting from scratch, it's unlikely, but you can still aim for a good IIT rank with consistent effort.
