Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur: The first institute which has been recognized as a national institute is the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. After the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur and Jadavpur University, IIT Kharagpur is the 3rd oldest technical institute in West Bengal. Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay: The government of India established the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1958. With fourteen academic departments, ten centres, two schools and three interdisciplinary programmes, IIT Bombay started their journey. Indian Institute of Technology, Madras: The third institute which has been recognized as a national institute is the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. IIT Madras was established in 1959. Q: Is IIT a government college?
A:
IIT are an autonomous public technical and research university located in India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as institutions of national importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance.
Q: Do all IIT students get a job?
A:
Not every IITian leaves the campus with a job offer. A country where a bunch of engineers are graduating every year it's hard for even the top institutions to guarantee 100 per cent placements.
Q: Is it difficult to get into the IITs?
A:
This a vague question because it depends on the candidate and their merit as well. In 2014, 13.6 lakhs students sat for the IIT-JEE exams and only 9,784 seats were available in all the IITs put together. That's an acceptance rate of only 0.7 per cent. Even though the IIT-JEE exam is extremely tough, the number of aspirants keeps on increasing every year.
