National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, the top-ranked NIT on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), has placed an average of 71 per cent of its graduating BTech students in jobs over the past seven years. NIT Rourkela in Odisha, ranked third, has done better with job drives, placing around 88 per cent of their students over the same seven years.

For the past seven years, the ministry of education’s National Institutes Ranking Framework (NIRF) has been ranking engineering colleges based on a range of factors including an institution’s placement record. To rank an engineering college for one year, NIRF considers placement data, including numbers placed and median salary, for three years.

The NITs are Institutes of National Importance and, run by the central government, are highly regarded among public engineering colleges. NIT Tiruchirappalli has ranked at the top among all NITs since the NIRF rankings began in 2016. In 2020, NIT Karnataka replaced Rourkela as the second best NITs, a position it had held since 2016. NIT Warangal is the fourth highest ranked NIT. In NIRF 2017 and 2018, NIT Calicut was at rank 44 and 50. After 2018, NIT Calicut constantly improved its position, becoming one of the top five NITs for the last five years. And in the latest year it is the only NIT whose rank has improved compared to the previous year.

Therefore, NIT Tiruchirappalli, Karnataka, Rourkela, Warangal and Calicut are the top five NITs across the country and were selected for this analysis because they have remained in the top five for the last five years. Also, all five have always been among the top 50 engineering institutes since the ranking started .

NIT Placements: 2015-22

Among all the top five NITs, although NIT Rourkela had the highest placement percentage in 2022, it has decreased by 7 per cent compared with its last seven year placement performance. NIT Calicut had a placement percentage of around 61 percent till 2016-17 and was not among the top five NITs till then. Its ranking improved, as did its placement record, by more than 26 percentage points. Among all the top NITs, NIT Calicut is the only institute which improved its rank in the latest NIRF ranking.

Although NIT Tiruchirappalli held the top NIRF rank among all the NITs across the country for seven years, it had the lowest students placements percentage for most of these years.

The placement percentage of all these top NITs were calculated on the basis of the number of placed students and the students who graduated in the minimum stipulated time. Some of those from the graduating batch of BTechs who were not placed could have gone for higher studies.

NIT Placement: Salaries Rose Marginally

Although NIT Warrnagal posted the lowest placement percentage, the median salary at which its graduates were hired has increased quite steadily over the last few years, but a sharp increase is seen this year. It became the top NIT in terms of highest median salary offered to the graduates.

Tiruchirappalli, Rourkela , Surathkal and Calicut all showed a steady increase in their median salaries from 2015 to 2022. But for NIT Rourkela, the median salary decreased in 2016-17, after which it took four years to reach the same milestone, but in the latest year its salary increased by 46 per cent and became the second highest among top five NITs. The chart below shows how salaries have risen or fallen at each of the five NITs over the seven years.

Jobs And Higher Studies

More than 15 per cent of NIT Tiruchirappalli students opt for higher studies while that figure for the other NITs in this analysis is less than 10 per cent. The graph shows that the graduates choosing the working life is more than going for higher studies over the last seven years. In all the NITs, the number of students who opted for higher education sharply decreased compared to last year.

However, it is not correct to assume that everyone not landing a job is going for further studies. Study of the data shared by these institutions with NIRF shows that on average only about 90 percent of the total number of students to graduate went for jobs or further studies. There is still another 10 percent whose future is not known. NIT Calicut was the only institute that shared data for almost 98 per cent of its students, but the average of these five NITs was still 90 per cent.

Have a question related to JEE Main ?

Hello aspirant,

If your syllabus is completed with theory , use the next 30 days only for smart revision . Make short notes and revise formulas daily for Physics , Chemistry and Maths . Solve previous year JEE Main questions topic-wise and then full mock tests every 3-4 days. Analyse mistakes properly and revise weak areas again . Avoid new topics and focus on accuracy , speed and confidence building during revision.

Hope the details will help you.

THANK YOU

Preparing for the JEE Main in just 30 days is a challenging but achievable task if you follow a highly disciplined and strategic approach. According to the Careers360 30-day study plan , the key is to shift your focus from learning everything to mastering high-weightage topics and practicing rigorously.

Phase 1: Week 1 & 2 – Focus on High-Weightage Chapters

During the first 15 days, prioritize topics that frequently appear in the exam.

  • Physics: Modern Physics, Heat & Thermodynamics, Optics, and Current Electricity.

  • Chemistry: GOC (General Organic Chemistry), Chemical Bonding, p-Block elements, and Solutions.

  • Maths: Matrices & Determinants, Sequences & Series, Coordinate Geometry, and Vector & 3D Geometry.

  • Study Strategy: Use NCERT for Chemistry and simplified notes for Physics/Maths. Spend 3-4 hours on each subject daily.

Phase 2: Week 3 – Revision and Formula Memorization

  • Short Notes: Go through the short notes you made during the first two weeks.

  • Flashcards: Use flashcards for inorganic chemistry reactions and physics formulas.

  • Mock Tests: Start giving one full-length mock test every alternate day. Analyze your mistakes immediately to avoid repeating them.

Phase 3: Final Week – Full Simulation and Relaxation

  • Previous Year Papers (PYQs): Solve the last 3-5 years of JEE Main papers in the actual exam time slot (9 AM–12 PM or 3 PM–6 PM) to sync your body clock.

  • No New Topics: Stop picking up new chapters. Focus solely on what you already know to build confidence.

  • Accuracy over Speed: Focus on getting the questions right rather than attempting all of them, as negative marking can significantly lower your percentile.

Hello

I think your question sounds like this: "Can a candidate who passed Class 12 in 2025 and filled JEE Main Session 1 apply for Session 2 as 'Appearing' in 2026 as a fresh board candidate, and will both sessions have the same details? "

So yes, you can fill the JEE Main Session 2 as "Appearing". The information filled in Session 1 will remain exactly as it was and will not change.
Session 1 and Session 2 are treated as separate applications. There is no issue if the qualifying status is different in both sessions. During counselling, the board marks that meet the 75 rule will be considered.

Hello,

If you filled the JEE Main January form with Class 12 passed in 2025 and are planning to appear again for the Class 12 exam through HOS, there is usually no serious issue. You were eligible to apply since you had already passed Class 12. Reappearing through HOS for improvement or requalification is allowed, provided HOS is a recognized board. During counselling, your latest valid Class 12 result will be considered. Make sure you meet the 75% marks or top 20 percentile requirement where applicable. If a correction window opens, update details if needed.

Hope this has solved your query. Thank You.

Good Evening,

Yes, you are eligible for both JEE Mains and Advanced, as you completed your 12th with physics, chemistry and biology. Moreover, you passed mathematics in 2025, which makes you fit the eligibility criteria of both exams.

Aspirant, I would like to inform you that Careers360 recently launched a free mock test series for JEE students. The last date of registration is 8th January, 2026. Enroll and solve chapter wise question papers and improve you concept and assess your learning. The link to the mock test series is attached herewith. https://learn.careers360.com/test-series-jee-main-free-mock-test/

Best regards.
