No, as per the JEE Mains information brochure 2025, NTA has not removed the 75% condition from JEE 2026 for Droppers belonging to General, OBC, EWS categories. Candidates need to have secured 75% in class 12th to be capable of admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIS through JEE Mains. The same criteria apply for JEE Advanced aspirants as well. Nonetheless, students can still apply for the IIT JEE exam. Several other institutes do not require the 75% criteria for droppers for B.Tech admission.
The SC, ST and PwD category candidates do not require the have 75% in class 12th to gain admission through JEE Main 2026 or JEE Advanced 2026. The authority has provided relaxation to applicants belonging to these categories. Instead of 75%, they must have an aggregate of 65% in class 12th.
The National Testing Agency has not removed the 75% criterion from JEE 2026 for dropper or any other candidates from the Open, OBC or EWS categories. The simple reason for this step is to filter out the candidates. Since the competition for admission to premier institutes is increasing every year, the authority employs the class 12th percentage cutoff as a step to decrease competition. Also, one of the other reasons could be that the 75% criteria in class 12th can act as a proof of the student’s calibre in pursuing a BTech degree in some of the best institutes.
Although droppers must have taken a break in studies for a year or more, they need not panic. There are several major colleges like Amrita Vishwa Vidhyapeetham, Galgotia University, Thapar University etc that accept students based on their merit in JEE 2026, but do not place the 75% condition. Moreover, state-level counsellings in states, like, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan etc offer BTech admission to very good state government colleges. Hence. Irrespective of whether the 75% criteria is removed from JEE 2026 for droppers or not, they can take the test and apply for these colleges.
