IIT Kanpur M.Tech Admission 2018 will be conducted on the basis of candidates performance in GATE 2018. Candidates with B.Tech degree from IITs with a CGPA of 8 are considered eligible for direct admissions to M.Tech programmes across IITs. Rest all candidates have to appear in GATE to be eligible for M.Tech admissions at IIT Kanpur. GATE scores are valid for 3 years, therefore, the candidates apply for M.Tech admissions at the institute on GATE score basis for 3 years. However, only having valid scores does not guarantee admission, as candidates have to further apply through 2 channels. First, the candidates had to apply through IIT Kanpur M.Tech admission application portal and then through the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) for accepting admission offers. The application form of IIT Kanpur M.Tech admission 2018 was available from March 15, 2018 and the deadline for application form filling was April 15, 2018. IIT Guwahati had conducted GATE 2018 on February 3, 4, 10 and 11, while the application form of GATE 2018 was available from August 31, 2017 for all the candidates. GATE 2018 was held in online mode in 8 sessions for 23 papers, while the result for GATE 2018 was announced on March 16, 2018.

M.Tech Admission Process through GATE 2018

  • For admissions to M.Tech programmes at IIT Kanpur and other IITs, the candidates had to first apply at the institute through its application/admission portal. Further, they will have to apply separately through Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) for accepting admission offers.

  • However, for M.Tech admissions at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, the admission procedure takes place through Centralized Counselling for M.Tech. (CCMT). For admissions to NITs, IIITs and centrally funded institutes, the candidates have to fill the application form and apply for admissions through this process. In this process, the seats are allotted through counselling and seat allotment procedure.

IIT Kanpur M.Tech Eligibility Criteria 2018

  • Candidates having passed B.Tech from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last 2 years in B.Tech are eligible for direct M.tech admissions at IITs. Such candidates are not required to have appeared in GATE.

  • For M.Tech Engineering admissions, the candidates must have B.Tech./BE./M.Sc.(Engg.) degree in the respective or allied area.

  • For M.Tech. admission in Biological Sciences and Bio-engineering, the candidates need to have bachelor’s degree in pharmacy/medicine with marks/CPI not less than the specified minimum.

  • For admission into M.Tech. Geosciences, the candidates should have passed M.Sc. in Earth Science or allied programmes or B.Tech/B.E. degree in Civil/Geosciences Engineering with a valid GATE score.

IIT Kanpur M.Tech Application Form 2018


IIT Kanpur M.Tech Application Procedure 2018 included the following stages, Candidates can check the following steps for reference since the application process is now over. 

  • Stage 1 - Registration

  • Stage 2 – Filling and Partial Submission of Application Form

  • Stage 3 - Uploading Scanned Documents

  • Stage 4 - Application Fee Payment

  • Stage 5 - Final Application Submission

What to keep ready before filling the application form of IIT Kanpur M.Tech 2018?

All scanned documents should be in (.jpg or .png) format.

  • Before they start to fill the application form, the candidates must keep the following documents ready in the prescribed format and size. Candidates can keep the scanned copies of the following documents ready in their computer and upload them online in the application form form there.  

  • Good quality, scanned Photograph (Passport size) and signature of the candidate. (The photograph should not be more than 2 months old, must reflect the complete frontal image and should be in a high quality. Size of the photograph and signature must be less than 40 KB).

  • Scanned copy of (class 10th)certificate or date of birth certificate with file size less than 600 kb.

  • Gate Score document in size less than 600 kb

  • Qualifying degree and marksheet in 600 KB or less. Candidates can also upload one consolidated marksheet upto the current semester.

  • Caste Certificate (If applicable) not older than 3 months. Size not more than 600 kb.

  • PwD Certificate in file size not more than 600 kb (Only for PwD candidates).

Stage 1 Registration

The very first stage of the application procedure of IIT Kanpur M.Tech Admission 2018 is registration. Candidates need to Sign In using a user ID, password and email ID. Further, after sign in or registration, the candidates have to log in using the registered details (used at the time of fresh sign in).


Stage 2 – Filling and Partial Submission of Application Form


The next stage after the registration is filling the application form online. Candidates need to enter/fill the following information,

  • Name

  • Date of birth

  • Parents name

  • Category

  • Nationality

  • PwD Status

  • Marital Status

  • Address

  • City

  • State

  • Pin Code

  • Landline/mobile number

  • Select Engineering Programme

  • Select candidate status

  • University name and address (Qualifying exam)

  • Institute code

  • Qualifying degree and discipline 

  •  Year of completing the degree

  • Rank in qualifying exam

  • Qualifying year percentage semester-wise

  • Overall percentage

  • Work experience

  • Area of specialisation

Note: Cross-check all particulars entered by you in the application form. you may edit/change if need be and finally submit the form. Press "Cancel" for editing. Submit the application form by clicking on "Submit" button. The status of the applicationn form is "Partial Submission" here.


Stage 3 - Uploading Scanned Documents

Upload all the required documents in the prescribed format as mentioned in the list above.


Stage 4 - Application Fee Payment

  • Before paying the fee, the candidates can edit/modify the details or documents uploaded by clicking on “Cancel” on the payment link.

  • General category/OBC/OBC-NCL candidates have to pay Rs. 400, while other reserved category candidates have to pay Rs. 200 as application fee.

  • Application fee can be paid through Axis Bank payment gateway or by net banking/Credit/Debit Card.

Stage 5 - Final Application Submission

The system will generate transaction ID and amount once the fee payment is successful. For submitting the application, candidates must press on “Final Submission” button. Candidate status will change to “Applied”. Keep the application reference ID for future references and do not send any hard copy/downloaded copy of the application form to the institute.


Selection Process for IIT Kanpur M.Tech admission 2018

  • Qualifying/shortlisted candidates may be called for interview/written test or counselling. Depending on that, the candidates must carry the following,

  • Printout of the online submitted application form

  • Details or receipt of the application fee payment

  • All the above mentioned documents in original and attested photocopies (whichever is applicable).
