Imagine a world without music, or sound. Nobody can hear the other. People communicate with the help of writing or body language but no words. No sounds. No guitar, no songs, no piano, no chirping of birds or the soulful voice of Adele and Ed Sheeran. No harmony and no symphony. Difficult to imagine such a dreadful existence, right?

Sound Engineering, A Career Choice For The Musically Inclined

We as species have managed to evolve our senses in a meticulous manner to serve our purposes. Hearing, which began as a faculty for catching and processing sounds from nature soon transcended to the invention of languages. One could say that languages are collections of sounds that mean something. Over the period of time, this also led to the invention of instruments that could produce sounds to express a feeling.

Sounds come together in harmony, studded together by the skill of the artist, to create what we call music that appeals to the one who listens. In recent years we have had a technological revolution. Technology touched and transformed almost every aspect of human life. It is what keeps the world running. Music as an art is thriving because of technology.

Sound engineers learn the fundamentals of audio, technical aspects of sound, production, editing, recording and fusion. Students also get the opportunity to learn camera use, microphone and choice of musical instruments. You get trained in listening, and manipulation of sound and get a deep insight into recording and editing software and tools.

The demand for sounds has gone up given the proliferation of different mediums such as movies, advertisements, concerts, songs and albums. Sound engineers are the ones who make things interesting. They possess the skills and knowledge necessary to create interesting sounds.

Be it making the Mario tune, GTA soundtrack, AR Rahman concert or creating a film score, sound engineers make these possible. They play an important role in the making of technical instruments and also share a responsibility towards enriching the craft. This profession is in great demand. It would be interesting to observe the benefits of an internship in this field. Read further to learn from the experience of the sound engineer as an intern.

Parth U., Pt. Deen Dayal University, Gandhi Nagar

As a sound engineer, I was always looking for ways to contribute to my field of interest. When I was searching for an internship, I made sure to look at those options which could give me the kind of experience that I would need to sharpen my skills.

My teachers helped me find the right place for me and I was introduced to the "Raga Music" company. Once my internship started, there were so many things happening around me that it became hard for me to choose what to do first. I was hired as an intern in June 2022, and due to my work ethic and commitment to learning, I quickly became one of their best employees.

As an intern, I was responsible for recording audio files that are used in video games and commercials. My responsibilities included getting all the audio files ready for recording by editing them together or cleaning up any mistakes that had been made by another editor. In addition, I would make sure everything was ready for recording before our producer left the office after work each day.

During my internship, I met many wonderful people who helped me at every step to understand what was important and the aspects that needed attention. My internship experience is something that has shaped my understanding of the subject and has helped me perfect my skills as well.

An internship can be a great way to improve your understanding of concepts in your field of interest. It was for a period of two months and I can say that I learnt a lot. Though I put in a lot of effort, I am glad that I did that internship. From making edits in the background score of a movie to recording mixes and managing vocals, I had an opportunity to learn everything I had wanted.

Parth’s experience gives us an insight into this creative process of becoming a successful sound engineer. If you like playing with sounds, choose this field and create something phenomenal. Sound engineering internships will help you deepen your knowledge and know interesting people who can help you learn and grow.
