Students of Saintgits College of Engineering have made history in the national innovation competition KPIT Sparkle 2026 organized by KPIT Technologies. The Saintgits team won the first position and a cash award of Rs. 10 lakh, beating top engineering institutes in the country including IIT Madras.
In the competition, which was contested by students from the country's top technical educational institutions, IIT Madras came in second place and Pune Vidyarthi Grihas College of Engineering came in third place.

The Saintgits team received the award for developing a smart glass interface called 'SignVisor' that helps people with speech and hearing impairments communicate with ordinary people.
This wearable technology, which combines a camera and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, recognizes sign language in real time and translates it into sound or text. This will help bridge the communication gap between the hearing-impaired and the general public who do not know sign language.
Sharlet George Kurian, Nevin K. Mathew, Muhammed Afran, and Navneet Vishnu K., students of the Computer Science Department (B.Tech 2022-26 batch) of Saintgits College, were behind this project. Dr. Nisha Joseph, Head of the Computer Science Department of the college, provided the necessary guidelines for this project.
There were 18,114 registrations from colleges across the country. Out of these, the top 16 teams were selected to participate in the finals held at the KPIT campus in Pune. In a stage where teams from prestigious institutions including IITs came with their cutting-edge innovations, the Saintgits students won the first place with a completely innovative idea.
Despite the advancements in technology, people with speech and hearing impairments still face major communication challenges in society. The inability of ordinary people to understand sign language often isolates them socially and educationally. Signvisor is a permanent solution to this problem. The main challenge faced by the team was to develop a smart glass that was affordable yet easy to wear. Since it was a completely new approach, unlike existing technologies, they had to create their own custom dataset to train the system. The students conducted extensive research for this. This prototype, which was built at a very low cost, can be easily acquired by educational institutions and individuals.
This historic achievement marks Saintgits as a leading innovation hub at the national level. The foundation for this achievement is the excellent academic and research environment at Saintgits, which empowers students to develop innovations that are beneficial to society, rather than just being confined to the curriculum. The campus culture that provides excellent support for students' ideas sets Saintgits apart from other engineering colleges.
The students say their goal is to "empower every gesture." Using the support and financial assistance received from the competition, the team aims to further develop Signvisor and quickly bring this technology to the daily lives of many people with hearing and speech impairments. The college will provide all the support they need, said Principal Dr. Sudha T.
